Come to My House Tomorrow
Little Kangaroo Arno was taking a walk by the lake when she encountered Snail Agreen. Normally, the kangaroo would walk her way, and the snail would crawl hers, with no relation at all. But at that moment, Snail Agreen spotted a four-leaf clover, and Kangaroo Arno saw it at the same time.
The four-leaf clover was right beside Agreen, and with a stretch of her antennae, she hooked onto it. Kangaroo Arno was a step too late: “What a pity, I really wanted that four-leaf clover to give to myself as a birthday gift.”
Snail Agreen heard this and generously said, “Then I’ll give it to you. After all, I don’t even know when my birthday is.”
Kangaroo Arno was overjoyed, and she and Snail Agreen started chatting. When they parted, Kangaroo Arno said, “Snail Agreen, my home is right across the lake in a little grass hut. You just need to cross the small bridge, then walk across a meadow, and you’ll be there. Tomorrow is my birthday. Please come to my house as my guest. I’ll be waiting for you, so make sure to come early!”
Snail Agreen was very willing. She had never been to anyone’s home before.
Early the next morning, Little Kangaroo Arno was busy making a cake while listening for any sounds outside the door.
“Plop plop,” who has arrived? It wasn’t Snail Agreen. Arno saw a little red horse, carrying a bag of wheat to the blue mill to grind flour.
“Cluck cluck,” who has arrived? It wasn’t Snail Agreen. Arno saw a hen running to chase after a small flying bug.
“Clip clop, clip clop,” who has arrived? It wasn’t Snail Agreen. Arno saw an old bear, puffing on a pipe and carrying a load of corn cobs back home.
By this time, the sun had already set, and the golden glow of the sunset filled the sky.
The birthday cake was still sitting on the table, waiting to be eaten together with Snail Agreen, but she hadn’t shown up. Little Kangaroo Arno was very angry. She slammed the door, kicked over the stove, knocked over a bottle of vinegar, wrinkled her new dress, and even wanted to throw the carefully made cake out the window.
Just then, Arno heard a faint knock at the door.
She opened it and saw Snail Agreen, sweating profusely and panting: “I finally made it. I set off before the sun even rose, but I didn’t realize your house was so far away.”
“My house is far? I only need to jump 20 times to get here, it doesn’t even take 2 minutes! It’s just a small bridge and a meadow away!” Kangaroo Arno was about to shout, but then she noticed Agreen still slowly inching her way at the doorstep.
Oh, so snails really do crawl incredibly slowly.
“I’m so happy you came. It would be wonderful if you could live near me; then we could be neighbors. And if you ever want to go somewhere far, I could take you along.” Arno had already forgiven Agreen. They joyfully began to eat the cake together.
