the eyes of cows

On a flower-filled meadow, a little water buffalo and a little yellow calf happily grazed on the grass, occasionally letting out a cheerful “moo.”

At that moment, a pair of butterflies flew in. They danced and flitted around in front of the little water buffalo’s eyes, looking left and right, unwilling to leave.

Two little bees flew in, circling in front of the little yellow calf’s eyes, inspecting him from all angles, also reluctant to leave.

The little water buffalo opened his eyes wide and curiously asked, “Beautiful butterflies, why aren’t you looking for flowers? Why are you circling in front of my eyes?”

The butterflies giggled and said, “Little water buffalo, your eyes are round, big, and sparkling, just like a big mirror. We’re using them to fix our floral skirts.”

The little water buffalo playfully blinked his eyes and said, “I see the most beautiful butterflies ever!”

“We see the most beautiful version of ourselves too. Thank you, little water buffalo.” The butterflies fluttered away.

The little bees said to the little yellow calf, “Little yellow calf, your eyes are round, big, and glistening, like a clear spring. We’re using them to relax and refresh our minds.”

The little yellow calf happily blinked his eyes and said, “I see the bees with the sweetest smiles!”

“We see the happiest version of ourselves too. Thank you, little yellow calf.” The bees buzzed away.

The little yellow calf and the little water buffalo happily started playing together, bumping into each other, swatting each other with their tails, giggling all the while.

But as they played, somehow, one of them upset the other, and they both grew angry. They raised their ears, scrunched up their noses, and pressed their heads against each other, pushing with all their might. Their angry eyes were nearly touching as they glared at each other…

Suddenly, they both stopped.

“Your eyes reflect the ugliest version of me—red-faced, puffing my neck, baring my teeth,” said the little yellow calf to the little water buffalo.

“Yeah, in your eyes, I look terrible too. I never realized how scary I looked when I was mad!” said the little water buffalo.
