A tree hole in a big tree was Little Bear’s home. In winter, while it snowed heavily outside, Little Bear would sleep in the warm tree hole.
Spring came, and then summer arrived. The weather became so hot, and even inside the tree hole it was quite warm. Little Bear thought: “If I dig down inside the tree hole to make a basement, wouldn’t it be cooler?”
He had heard that the mole was good at digging, so Little Bear went to ask the mole for help. The mole said, “I can only dig through dirt, not wood. The otter has teeth that can gnaw through wood. You should ask him.” Little Bear found the otter by the pond, and when the otter heard he could help Little Bear, he was very happy. He bared his big teeth and said, “If it’s about gnawing through wood, I’m the only one who can do it.”
But the wood under the tree hole was too hard. Little Bear and the otter worked for several days, putting in a lot of effort, and only after much hard work did they dig deep enough to see the tree roots and soil. Ah, Little Bear lay at the bottom of the tree hole, feeling especially happy. The newly dug basement was much cooler, and it even smelled of damp earth. It was really nice.
Little Bear was so tired that he fell asleep and slept for several days. When he finally lazily made his way out of the tree hole, he looked up and froze. Huh? Why have the tree leaves turned yellow? The leaves on other trees were still green, but the leaves on his tree looked like they were dying.
The big tree had been hollowed out and its roots damaged, and soon it withered away.
During a fierce storm, the tree fell. Poor Little Bear, in his foolishness, had destroyed his own home.
