Green Stars Story

One evening, there was going to be a concert in the forest, and Little Squirrel was going to sing on stage.

Little Squirrel thought, “If I’m going to perform on stage, I must dress up beautifully. But how should I do it?”

She went to the garden and saw the green grass. “I could weave a hat out of grass and wear it on my head, it would look beautiful,” she thought. Just as Little Squirrel was about to pick some grass, the grass cried out, “Don’t pick me! Don’t pick me! It hurts!”

Being kind, Little Squirrel didn’t pick the grass and walked away. Then, she saw a beautiful rose. “If I weave a necklace out of rose petals, it will surely look lovely,” she thought. But as she was about to pick the rose, it cried out, “Don’t pick me! It hurts!”

Again, kind Little Squirrel didn’t pick the rose and walked away.

At that moment, two fireflies were hiding under a leaf and said, “The green grass is where we play, and the red roses are where we sleep. Little Squirrel didn’t pick the grass or the rose, she’s so nice.”

That night, the moon rose, and Little Squirrel went to the concert without dressing up at all.

The forest concert began, and Little Squirrel was the first to perform. When the curtain was drawn, all the audience below was stunned: Little Squirrel looked so beautiful tonight! There were two bright green stars on her pointed little ears! Little Squirrel had never looked so pretty!

She sang so beautifully that all the stars in the sky came out, blinking their eyes as they quietly listened.

No one could tell that the green stars on Little Squirrel’s ears were actually two fireflies. Even Little Squirrel herself didn’t know.

  1. Expressive reading: Parents can read the story with emotion to help children experience the feelings of each character and evoke their inner emotions. Additionally, encourage emotional engagement with questions like, “Who would you help? How would you help them?” to deepen the story’s theme.
  2. Segmented storytelling: After reading the part, “Little Squirrel didn’t pick the grass or the flowers, she’s so kind,” ask questions like: “Why does Little Squirrel want to dress up nicely?” “Where did Little Squirrel go, and what did she see? What did she think?” and “Why didn’t she use flowers and grass to dress up?” “Who noticed what happened, and what did they say?” This helps children understand the plot.
  3. Discussion prompts: When reaching the line, “Little Squirrel had never looked so pretty,” ask: a) “Why did Little Squirrel look so beautiful?” b) “What were the green stars on Little Squirrel’s ears, and where did they come from?” At the end of the story, ask, “When Little Squirrel performed, why were the audience amazed? What were the green stars on Little Squirrel’s ears?”
