The Hen Hatches Eggs

Hen Qiqi laid seven eggs, and now she’s ready to hatch them!

Qiqi has always liked doing things differently, which is why others gave her this name. While other hens arrange their eggs in a circle and sit on top to hatch them slowly, Qiqi is different. She stacks the seven eggs one on top of the other, creating a tall pile. Then, she gently hops to the very top and starts incubating them.

Rooster Guaiguai happily says, “Qiqi, you’re amazing!”

Hen Huahua is frightened when she sees this and says, “Qiqi, what if you fall from up there?” Qiqi replies, “Thank you, but don’t worry, I’ll be careful and won’t fall.”

Qiqi stayed on top for twenty-one days. Then, “crack, crack,” seven sounds were heard as the eggshells broke open. The chicks were born! But they still preferred to stay stacked on top of each other and didn’t want to separate. Qiqi gave each of them a name from bottom to top: Xiaoyi, Xiao’er, Xiaosan, Xiaosi, Xiaowu, Xiaoliu, and Xiaoqi.

Qiqi and Guaiguai caught bugs every day to feed the seven little chicks, who grew bigger each day. One day, Qiqi told them, “My dears, come down and learn how to catch bugs on the ground.” One by one, they jumped down with a “plop, plop,” and found many bugs on the ground. The chicks caught a lot and filled their bellies.

Although they were never hungry, they didn’t have any friends. The other chicks would always call them weirdos.

One day, the seven little chicks stacked themselves again and went to the cornfield to catch bugs. Xiaoyi caught bugs on the ground, Xiao’er caught bugs on the grass, Xiaosan caught bugs on the corn stalks, Xiaosi, Xiaowu, and Xiaoliu caught bugs on the corn leaves, while Xiaoqi, who stood at the very top, claimed the bugs on the corn tassels.

“Help! Help!…,” came a loud cry from the distance. Who was shouting for help? From her high vantage point, Xiaoqi saw that it was the Big Bad Wolf bullying chick Diandian.

The seven stacked chicks rushed over and stood in front of Diandian. The Big Bad Wolf, seeing seven heads, fourteen eyes, and seven beaks, was shocked. “What kind of monster is this?” The wolf began to feel afraid.

All seven chicks said in unison, “Seven heads are smarter! We specialize in dealing with bullies like you!”

Then, the seven chicks started pecking the Big Bad Wolf—some pecked his ears, some pecked his eyes, and some pecked his nose…

“Help! Help!” The Big Bad Wolf was terrified and ran away, clutching his head.

“Thank you!” said Diandian. “If it weren’t for you, I would have been eaten by the Big Bad Wolf today.”

The story of the seven little chicks outsmarting the Big Bad Wolf quickly spread, and all the other animals admired them greatly. They all came to see them and wanted to be their friends. From then on, the seven little chicks had many, many friends, and they lived happily together.
