The Kind-Hearted Little Squirrel Story

One day, after playing for a long time, a little squirrel was tired and rested on a tree branch. Suddenly, he noticed a little crab not far below had fallen into a large puddle. The little crab was flailing its claws wildly, looking like it was about to sink to the bottom of the water.

“Oh no! The little crab is drowning!” The squirrel quickly slid down from the tree, pulled the little crab out of the water, and moved it to a dry pit.

But the little crab didn’t seem grateful. It crawled out of the pit, waving its claws, heading back toward the water.

“Hey! You can’t go there! There’s water, it’s dangerous!” The little squirrel quickly pulled the little crab back.

To keep the crab in the pit, the squirrel brought his best pine nuts and piled them in front of the crab. He even used pine branches to cover the opening of the pit tightly. When it was dinnertime, the squirrel reluctantly went home.

The dinner was abundant, but the little squirrel was still thinking about the crab and ate very little. His mother noticed something was odd.

That night, as the squirrel lay in bed, he kept poking his head out to look outside. His mother was sure that the little squirrel was hiding something from her.

The next morning, when the squirrel’s mother left the house, the little squirrel immediately slid down the tree and ran towards the pit where the crab was, completely unaware that his mother was secretly following him. In fact, his mother, concerned about him, pretended to leave but stayed nearby. When she saw him sneaking down the tree, she quietly followed him.

When the squirrel reached the pit, he found the little crab lying weakly at the bottom, looking lifeless. The pine nuts from the day before hadn’t been touched. The little squirrel was so worried that he was on the verge of tears.

His mother gently patted him on the shoulder and said, “Silly child, is this why you’ve been eating so little and not sleeping well?”

The little squirrel replied, “I saw the crab drowning, and it reminded me of when I almost drowned once. I wanted to help him, but why did things turn out like this?”

His mother said, “You should let the crab choose its own way of living.” Then she removed the pine branches covering the pit and lifted the little crab out.

As soon as the crab was out of the pit, it perked up and scuttled sideways back to the puddle. In the water, the crab looked full of energy, blowing bubbles constantly.

The squirrel’s mother explained, “See, crabs can live both on land and in water. The puddle might be dangerous for you, but it’s not dangerous for the crab.”

The little squirrel said sincerely, “Oh, I see! Mom, from now on, whenever I don’t understand something, I’ll ask you first.”

His mother smiled and hugged the little squirrel tightly.
