The Story of the Frog Selling Rice Cake

In a small street by the fields, the frog Guagua was selling rice cakes.

The sun was scorching, and Guagua called out again and again: “Rice cakes for sale!” But no one came to buy. As the pieces of rice cake were about to harden from the heat of the sun, Guagua had no choice but to push his cart back home.

When Guagua arrived at his doorstep, he bumped into his neighbor, Uncle Turtle. “Guagua, did you sell all your rice cakes?” Uncle Turtle asked.

Guagua shook his head and said, “Oh, today was really unlucky, I didn’t sell a single piece. Look, these soft and fluffy rice cakes are almost baked into rocks by the sun!” “Why don’t you use an umbrella to block out the sun?” asked Uncle Turtle.

“I do have an umbrella,” Guagua said, “but last time when there was a big wind, it tore the umbrella apart. The frame is still in the house.”

Uncle Turtle thought for a moment and then said, “Bring me the frame, I’ll help you replace the umbrella.” Guagua was delighted and hurried into the house to find the umbrella frame in a corner. He brought it to Uncle Turtle.

In front of Uncle Turtle’s house, many colorful flowers were blooming. He took the umbrella frame back home, and carefully plucked petal after petal from the flowers, sewing them together to make a beautiful, colorful umbrella canopy, which he attached to the frame.

The next morning, Guagua took the umbrella made by Uncle Turtle and pushed his cart to the street to sell rice cakes again.

The sun was blazing red. Guagua opened the floral umbrella, shading himself from the scorching sun. It was cool and comfortable under the umbrella! A strange fragrance began to waft from the umbrella and soon filled the street. “Oh, what a lovely scent!” said Mrs. Pig as she walked by. “It smells a little sweet too.” Walking next to her, Mrs. Sheep said, “Look, the scent is coming from where they’re selling rice cakes.”

“Really?” Mrs. Pig looked ahead and said, “Those rice cakes must be delicious; I have to buy a few pieces.” Hearing Mrs. Pig say this, everyone followed her to Guagua’s cart, all eager to buy rice cakes.

Very soon, all the rice cakes Guagua brought sold out, and everyone asked him to go home and bring more.

From that day on, Guagua’s business grew better and better. Uncle Turtle was also happy. To ensure that Guagua’s umbrella could have a fresh canopy every day, he planted a large patch of flowers, turning the front of his house into a beautiful garden.
