story about safety for kids: The Taste of Fear
Mom told Kangkang, “Never provoke strange dogs. They might bite.” But Kangkang didn’t listen to Mom! She greeted every dog she met and patted them on the head.
Dad told Kangkang, “Never talk to strangers. Bad people might kidnap kids.” But Kangkang didn’t listen to Dad! She loved chatting with all kinds of people.
Grandpa told Kangkang, “Never play by the water alone. If you slip and fall in, you could drown.” But Kangkang didn’t listen to Grandpa! She often snuck off to the neighborhood pond to feed the fish with biscuits, ignoring Grandpa’s frantic warnings from behind.
Even though Kangkang was just a five-year-old girl, she was very brave. She loved playing wildly outside and had no idea what it felt like to be scared.
One day, Mom took Kangkang to the park to play. After a while, Kangkang got bored. She noticed that Mom was absorbed in her book and had a bold idea: “There’s a special pavilion in the park. I’ll go find it by myself!” As soon as the thought crossed her mind, Kangkang took off running toward a small forest nearby.
Exploring was so much fun! Kangkang found a few mushrooms in the woods, encountered a flock of pigeons in a meadow, watched boats on a river for a while, and blew dandelions by a small path. Along the way, she collected many different little stones and stuffed them into her pockets.
Finally, Kangkang got tired and started missing her mom. Where on earth was that special pavilion? Kangkang decided to head back, but now she realized that she had wandered quite far on her own.
The sun began to set, and Kangkang crossed through the small forest, arriving at the riverbank. The boats were no longer visible on the water. The fading sunlight sparkled on the river’s surface, making Kangkang squint. She remembered Grandpa’s warning and started walking carefully, worried that if her vision blurred, she might miss her step and fall into the water.
Leaving the riverbank, she reached a meadow. “Crunch, crunch.” Why was the forest so quiet? It was so quiet that Kangkang could clearly hear her own footsteps. “Whoosh!” A bird suddenly flew by, making Kangkang shiver. She remembered the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Narnia. It felt like every tree in the small forest had eyes staring at her, and at any moment, a terrifying wolf or witch might leap out from behind one of them. Kangkang grew very frightened, and before she knew it, tears started streaming down her face. She walked nervously, glancing around, her right hand tightly gripping a handful of small stones in her pocket.
“Kangkang, Kangkang—” It was Mom’s voice! “Mommy—” Kangkang ran toward the sound and threw herself into her mother’s arms, bursting into tears.
“Where did you run off to by yourself? Mommy was so worried. You can’t wander off alone, do you understand?”
Kangkang nodded vigorously. She had truly tasted fear. Her mother’s embrace felt so warm. Mommy was right!
