Crocodiles story Can’t Smile

One morning, a crocodile was basking in the sun by the pond. It so wished someone would come by and talk to it. Just then, a little girl walked over and said, “Look, a big crocodile!” The crocodile heard someone call out to it, its eyes rolled around, and then it opened its mouth wide and smiled at the little girl with an “Ah-hehe” laugh.

“Ahh—” the little girl screamed in fright and ran away.

“What’s the matter? Did I do something wrong?” the crocodile said. “I was just smiling at her!”

The crocodile’s good friend, the toothpick bird, flew over and asked, “Why are you upset? Has someone bullied you?”

“No, not at all. Just now, I smiled at that little girl, but she got scared and ran away,” the crocodile said.

“Oh, crocodile, you can’t smile. When you do, your sharp teeth show, and that’s very scary, you know?” the toothpick bird explained.

“Really? I’ll have to think about what you said. How about this—I’ll keep my mouth shut except when I’m eating. Mmph—like this—” The crocodile demonstrated, closing its mouth tightly.

In the afternoon, the sun was shining very brightly, and the crocodile felt quite comfortable in the pond. It slowly surfaced. Suddenly, it heard a little boy exclaim, “Wow, such a big crocodile!”

At this moment, the crocodile’s good friend, the toothpick bird, flew over and said, “Old friend, now you can open your mouth wide.”

“Why? The little boy might get scared and cry,” the crocodile said.

“No, he won’t. As long as I fly into your mouth, they’ll be even more delighted,” the toothpick bird said.

The crocodile followed the toothpick bird’s advice and opened its mouth.

“Wow—! A little bird flew into the crocodile’s mouth,” the little boy said excitedly.

“Will it eat the little bird?” a little girl asked worriedly.

After a while, the toothpick bird had cleaned all the food scraps from the crocodile’s teeth and flew away.

“Oh, it turns out the crocodile isn’t scary at all,” the little girl said.

Now the crocodile can smile happily all day long. It smiles with pure joy.
