Story about creativity and perseverance

Little Mi used to love playing with clay. Whenever she had free time, she would knead and mold. Little clay figures, animals, plants… whatever came to her mind, she would create. She never thought her clay creations were ugly; she simply enjoyed the happiness that crafting with clay brought her.

But now, Little Mi suddenly hated playing with clay. One day, while she was molding clay in the yard, her new neighbor Xiao Bai came over to play. Little Mi enthusiastically invited him to admire her clay creations. Xiao Bai took a look, shook his head, and said, “Little Mi, your clay figures are really ugly. The dog doesn’t look like a dog, it looks like a donkey; the tree doesn’t look like a tree, it looks like grass; and the person doesn’t look like a person, it looks like an ape…”

“You’re talking nonsense!” Little Mi said angrily, “Go away, I don’t want to play with you.”

Little Mi liked playing with clay. But that was before. From that moment, she began to hate playing with clay.

Xiao Bai, feeling embarrassed, slunk away. After he left, Little Mi carefully examined her clay figures. The more she looked, the more she felt that Xiao Bai was right; her clay figures really were ugly.

With nothing else to do, Little Mi went to visit her good friend Xiao Na. When Little Mi arrived at Xiao Na’s house, Xiao Na was painting. Pointing to the paintings scattered all over the table, Xiao Na said, “Little Mi, look, these are all my paintings.”

Little Mi looked closely and realized that Xiao Na’s paintings were even uglier than her own clay figures. She was about to say something when Xiao Na spoke first, “Do you think my paintings are ugly? I know they are. But I just love painting, even if they’re ugly.”

Xiao Na’s words reminded Little Mi of her own situation, leaving her speechless.

“Hee hee!” Xiao Na giggled as she opened a drawer and pulled out a large stack of drawings. “Look, these are my older paintings. Aren’t they even uglier than the ones I paint now? But I believe that if I keep trying, I’ll paint better and better.”

Little Mi was deeply moved. “Xiao Na, you’re right. I believe your paintings will get better and better.”

Then, Little Mi said goodbye to Xiao Na and decided to go home and play with clay again. As she passed by Xiao Bai’s house, Xiao Bai came out and apologized, “Little Mi, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said your clay figures were ugly.”

“No! You were right. My clay figures are indeed not very good,” Little Mi said graciously. “But that doesn’t change my love for playing with clay. Besides, I believe my clay creations will get better and better!”

Xiao Bai encouraged her, “Little Mi, keep going! I believe you can do it!”

And so, Little Mi loved playing with clay again, from now until forever.
