Grandpa Story: Henry Grandpa Looks for Luck
“What is luck?” Amy’s question stumped Grandpa Henry. He thought and thought, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t come up with an answer. So, he went to the library and to the lucky wheel at the amusement park to look for answers, but came up empty-handed. Feeling a bit disappointed, Grandpa Henry wandered down Luck Avenue, bought a pie, and gave it to a homeless man. “I’m so lucky to have met you!” the homeless man’s words sparked inspiration in Grandpa Henry. He realized that luck is when a hungry homeless person gets a pie, when children play carefree in the park…
Grandpa Henry is an old man with a head full of gray hair. His little grandson, Amy, always loves to pester him with all sorts of questions, like “Why do mayflies only live for a day? Why is the Earth round? Why don’t I like eating carrots?” Grandpa Henry was used to answering these rapid-fire questions while sipping a cup of chamomile tea, always managing to come up with an answer that satisfied Amy. Amy often thought with envy: If only he could know as much as Grandpa Henry! Of course, that wish wasn’t something that could be granted overnight.
Amy was a bit unconvinced and always hoped to come up with a question that Grandpa couldn’t answer. So, that night, when Grandpa came to say “Goodnight,” Amy suddenly asked, “Grandpa, can you tell me, what is luck?”
Grandpa Henry, as usual, thought for a moment, but for this short question, he couldn’t come up with an answer as quickly as before.
He spent the whole night thinking about it.
He thought and thought, staring at the sky. He thought and thought in the bathtub.
But by the next morning, he still hadn’t come up with a good answer, not even chamomile tea could help him.
So, Grandpa Henry went to the town’s library, hoping to find an answer there.
But after flipping through many books, he still couldn’t give Amy a clear answer.
He then went to the amusement park’s lucky wheel and spun it round and round until his legs were weak.
Finally, Grandpa Henry let out a sigh.
“Maybe I can find an answer on that corner of Luck Avenue,” but he was unlucky again and came up empty-handed. So, Grandpa Henry walked and walked until he found himself in front of his favorite bakery.
