Moral tale for kids: Little Stool in the Garden
The garden was full of colorful little flowers. A small squirrel was happily jumping from branch to branch on a big tree. Soon, the squirrel felt that something was missing—there was no small stool in the garden. How wonderful it would be to sit on a little stool, nibbling on pine nuts, and enjoying the beautiful scenery! The squirrel jumped down from the tree and began searching for a little stool.
The squirrel searched and searched until suddenly, it spotted a multicolored stone that was flat and just the right size. Isn’t this exactly the stool I’ve been looking for? The squirrel carried the stone to the base of its big pine tree. It jumped down from the tree and landed perfectly on the stone, feeling wonderful.
Mushroom Niu Niu was passing through the squirrel’s garden on her way to another forest. She was tired and wanted to rest. To her delight, she spotted the squirrel’s little stool. Just as she was about to sit down, a voice suddenly shrieked, “Don’t sit there, that’s my little stool!” Mushroom Niu Niu was startled.
“Oh, little squirrel, it’s just an ordinary stone!”
“It’s my little stool. Didn’t you see my name carved on it?”
Mushroom Niu Niu said, “I’m tired from walking. Can I sit down for a while?”
The squirrel replied, “No way, unless you give me three gold coins.”
“I don’t have any gold coins!”
The squirrel scornfully glared at Mushroom Niu Niu and said, “What do you have? Show me.”
Mushroom Niu Niu excitedly said, “My left pocket is full of grass seeds, and my right pocket is full of flower seeds. I was planning to give them to my aunt, but if you like, I can give you some.” As she spoke, she grabbed a handful of seeds from her pockets.
The squirrel said, “Ha, so you’re just a poor thing. My little stool doesn’t welcome you. Who cares about your grass seeds? Look, I already have a garden and a lawn!”
Tears filled Mushroom Niu Niu’s eyes. She had never been so humiliated! She walked away, wiping her tears as she went, and the grass seeds and flower seeds in her hands fell to the ground.
Mushroom Niu Niu got lost. She wandered around the garden, the lawn, the stool, and the pine tree, scattering seeds everywhere.
Lo and behold, the grass seeds and flower seeds she scattered started to grow wildly as soon as they hit the ground. The grass grew taller than her head, and the flowers covered her nose.
Finally, Mushroom Niu Niu saw a little stool and sat down happily. She wanted to have a good rest, maybe even take a nap, before continuing her journey.
In her dream, Mushroom Niu Niu heard someone crying.
“Oh, my garden, my little stool!”
Mushroom Niu Niu woke up and realized it was the squirrel crying. She reached into her pockets and, to her surprise, found only a few grass seeds and flower seeds left. She quickly understood what had happened! The seeds were all gone, and she hadn’t wandered far—she was still in the squirrel’s garden!
The squirrel’s crying grew louder and louder.
“This selfish creature deserves bad luck,” Mushroom Niu Niu thought. She wanted to laugh but held it in.
After a while, Mushroom Niu Niu felt that the squirrel’s crying was about to bring tears to her own eyes. She stood up and shouted, “Little squirrel, stop crying! I’m right here. Your things are fine, they’re all still here!”
