Love and Weight Loss
Wang Pu’s girlfriend, Ge Xiaowei, was a typical foodie. If she hadn’t initially won over Wang Pu’s heart by appealing to his stomach with her culinary skills, she would never have caught his eye, given his usual standards for female beauty. After they got together, Wang Pu tried everything to change her, but after two years, not only had she not slimmed down, but she had grown even plumper under the nourishing effects of love.
Every time Wang Pu watched Ge Xiaowei eating with relish, completely indifferent to his feelings, he would feel utterly disheartened. The constant nagging from his mother about getting married only made his head throb more. Initially, he had set their wedding date for May Day, but after seeing Ge Xiaowei’s increasingly round figure, he found it unbearable to look at and postponed the wedding to October, hoping to give her time to lose weight. But she lacked willpower—her visits to the gym were sporadic at best, and whenever she did work out, she’d reward herself with a feast afterward, undoing all her efforts.
“Your appetite could break a Guinness World Record,” Wang Pu often said to Ge Xiaowei, “Please, stop eating so much, Ge Xiaopang (Little Fatty)!”
At this, Ge Xiaowei would blink her innocent eyes and say, “If I don’t fill my stomach, where will I find the strength to lose weight?”
Wang Pu was left speechless by this, and in the end, he bought her a gold membership card for a weight loss boot camp and forced it into her hands, saying, “I’ve signed a weight loss contract for you. The gym guarantees you’ll lose 20 pounds in three months without regaining it…”
Wang Pu thought that once Ge Xiaowei joined the boot camp, he wouldn’t have to worry anymore. But within a few days, the trainer called him to request her withdrawal, citing her lack of cooperation and frequent absences.
Furious, Wang Pu called Ge Xiaowei, but she didn’t answer. He searched for her everywhere but couldn’t find any trace of her. Just as he was about to report her missing, he found her in a newly opened dessert shop, sitting in the corner, devouring sweets.
“I’ve been searching everywhere for you, and here you are, hiding out and eating,” Wang Pu said angrily, his voice tinged with helpless frustration.
Ge Xiaowei smiled and handed him a piece of pastry. “Try this; it’s delicious.” Wang Pu felt exasperated and glared at her, saying, “Xiaowei, it seems there are some things we will never agree on. Maybe… maybe we should break up.”
The pastry in Ge Xiaowei’s hand fell to the floor as she stared at him in shock. “Just because I won’t lose weight?” Wang Pu sighed and said, “It’s not just about that. A lot of little things can reflect bigger problems.”
“But I love you so much…” Ge Xiaowei’s eyes welled up with tears.
“If you truly loved me, how could you not even manage something as small as losing weight?” Wang Pu interrupted her.
“I don’t want to break up. I promise you, I’ll lose enough weight to satisfy you before the wedding!” Ge Xiaowei’s tears fell as she took out paper and a pen from her handbag. While writing, she said, “I’ll write a weight loss pledge right now. If I don’t get my weight down to double digits, I won’t be fit to be your girlfriend.”
Wang Pu smiled faintly, thinking his reverse psychology had worked. He took the pledge, glanced at it, and said, “Alright, I’ll trust you one more time.”
In truth, it wasn’t that Ge Xiaowei hadn’t tried to lose weight before. But the more she tried, the more she couldn’t control her cravings. After losing a few pounds, she’d slack off, and her weight would immediately rebound. This cycle repeated itself until her determination waned. She understood Wang Pu’s good intentions but never expected him to use the threat of breaking up. This time, she was resolute—she would see this weight loss journey through to the end.
She began attending the weight loss boot camp diligently, cooperating with the trainer, and even wrote out a weight loss plan. It detailed how much additional exercise she should do each day and how many calories she should consume at each meal. She armed herself like a Saint Seiya, always ready to battle her fat.
One day, while working out on the treadmill, she accidentally stepped on the front board, and in an instant, the treadmill belt threw her off. She was taken to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a minor fracture in her left wrist, and the doctor fitted her with a protective brace.
The doctor said that the brace would be removed in a month, and her wrist would take about three months to heal. During this time, she needed plenty of rest, and only after her wrist recovered could she slowly resume activities. She shouldn’t lift anything heavy for six months to avoid muscle damage.
Ge Xiaowei’s weight loss plan was completely disrupted. But this time, she didn’t want to casually break her promise to Wang Pu. She thought, if she had to rest for a few months, she would have to rely on dieting alone to reach her goal before the wedding.
So, she ate even less than before. Occasionally, she wanted to indulge, but the sight of Wang Pu’s hopeful eyes made her hold back. Gradually, she turned from a “foodie” into a vegetarian.
Half a month later, she stood on the scale and excitedly said to Wang Pu, “Honey, look, I’ve already lost 8 pounds.”
Wang Pu looked her over and said calmly, “I don’t see any difference.”
This response was the biggest blow to a dieter. Ge Xiaowei was stunned for a moment before stammering, “I really did lose weight, but I still have a ways to go before reaching double digits.”
“That’s exactly it,” Wang Pu said, gently pulling her off the scale. “I see the effort you’ve made, but it’s not enough. If you could lose a bit more, your figure would be more attractive. I hope you’ll be my perfect bride.”
Hearing the word “perfect,” Ge Xiaowei felt immense pressure and continued her strict diet. To intensify the effect, she even started taking various weight loss pills.
A month later, she went to the hospital to have the cast removed. The attentive doctor noticed her pale complexion and suggested she undergo a thorough examination. The results revealed that she was pregnant.
Overjoyed, Ge Xiaowei immediately called Wang Pu to share the news, but he coldly replied, “I don’t want a child right now.”
Ge Xiaowei was stunned. “Are you saying you want me to abort the baby?”
“Of course,” Wang Pu responded. “Don’t forget about your weight loss pledge.”
His words hit her like a ton of bricks. She staggered out of the hospital, and as she reached the steps outside, everything went black, and she collapsed.
When she woke up, the first thing she did was move her hand to her stomach and ask the doctor beside her, “What about my baby?”
“I’m sorry, we couldn’t save it.”
She recalled the moments before she fainted and had anticipated this outcome. A tear slid down her cheek. She had known for some time that her extreme dieting and pill consumption had led to hypoglycemia, causing her frequent fainting spells. She just hadn’t expected this particular collapse to have such devastating consequences.
When Wang Pu and his mother arrived at the hospital and learned what had happened, his mother slapped him hard across the face. She wept and demanded her grandchild, while Wang Pu stood dumbfounded by the bed, unable to utter a word.
During her hospital stay, Ge Xiaowei reflected deeply on her two-year relationship with Wang Pu. She realized that she had lost herself not only in the pursuit of weight loss but also in many other aspects of her life. Now, she wasn’t sure whether she was maintaining the relationship through her imagination or using the relationship to sustain her ability to imagine.
On the day she was discharged, she took out a piece of paper and asked Wang Pu, “Do you remember this weight loss pledge?”
“I remember.”
“Well, I’m going to fulfill it now.” Her nose tingled with emotion, but she spoke firmly, “I couldn’t reach double digits, so I can’t be your girlfriend. Let’s part ways amicably. From now on, I’ll be in control of my own body!” With that, she tore the pledge into pieces and walked away without looking back.
Wang Pu stood there, stunned, but it was too late for regrets. Because of that pledge, he had lost more than just a relationship—it was much more than that.
