Emotional love story to cry: Never Let Go

Years ago, she was the director of the secretariat at the county’s cultural bureau. She was beautiful, graceful, with a pair of captivating dimples that made people fall for her instantly. Many men pursued her, but she didn’t pick and choose. She quickly fell in love. Perhaps, because of her natural beauty, she sought a perfect love; or maybe, because love is inherently selfish and doesn’t allow for any flaws. So, when she saw her lover walking hand in hand with another woman, she was heartbroken and despaired. She built a high wall around her heart, shutting out all the men who pursued her.

Once, the bureau organized a performance tour in the countryside, and she went along. When the group arrived at a remote Yao village, they discovered a natural cliff, about 10 meters high, steep and smooth. A thick rope hung from the top to the bottom of the cliff. The cliff had clearly been worked on by human hands; the protruding parts had been smoothed down. Could it be that people in this remote mountain were into rock climbing?

Seeing the confused looks on everyone’s faces, an older colleague from the bureau smiled. He walked up to the cliff, tugged on the rope, and said, “This isn’t for rock climbing! It’s a performance put on by the local Yao people to attract tourists. It’s meant to test the courage of love. A young man, to show his love to the woman he desires, must climb to the top of the cliff and then pull her up after him before they start officially dating.”

She had heard before that Yao women tested potential partners by asking them to help with plowing, house building, or harvesting. Only after the man passed these tests would the woman secretly give him a token, signaling her feelings and deciding who her sweetheart was. She, who had always been playful, had a sudden idea and suggested that they do an impromptu rock climbing performance. She wanted to experience it for herself.

Her suggestion caused a stir among the men in the group, who all prepared eagerly. But when they heard that the performance was fraught with difficulties and dangers, and that it was nearly impossible to reach the top without professional training, they backed out one by one, shaking their heads in disappointment at the base of the cliff.

At that moment, he, a recent college graduate who had just been assigned to the cultural bureau, walked up to the cliff. He wore glasses and had a scholarly appearance, without yet holding any official position in the bureau. He grabbed the rope and said to her, “Do you dare to try?”

She bit her lip, thinking of her failed love and envying the love at the top of the cliff, and decisively said, “I’ll try. If you can’t pull me up, I’ll just give up.”

He firmly grasped the rope, struggling as he climbed up the small indentations on the cliff. After much effort, climbing bit by bit, he reached the top, under the surprised gaze of everyone. Before they could react, he shouted down to her from the top, “Tie yourself securely with the rope and hold on tight.”

Everyone doubted him, waiting for him to fail to pull her up and make a fool of himself.

She looked up at him at the top of the cliff, tied herself securely, and gripped the rope. He lay flat on the top of the cliff, carefully pulling her up little by little. When he had pulled her about 5 meters up, it was clear that he was exhausted, his hands red and raw from the rope. The rope swung several times, and he almost lost his grip. But after several minutes of effort and several pauses, he managed to regain control.

Two meters, one meter, half a meter… he finally pulled her to the top of the cliff. Everyone cheered for them, and in that moment of excitement, he hugged her tightly. At that moment, she found her eyes welling up with tears.

On the way back to the city, she noticed the blisters on his hands, some of them bleeding. She asked him, “When you couldn’t hold on anymore, why didn’t you let go?”

“Once I’ve held on tight, I never let go,” he said with a smile, looking at her.

Back at the bureau, she secretly knitted him a sweater.

Two years later, they walked down the aisle, to the confusion of those who had once pursued her. However, happiness did not favor them—during a routine health check-up, he was diagnosed with uremia. The high cost of surgery and finding a well-matched kidney shattered all their dreams of happiness.

She borrowed over a hundred thousand yuan for his sake, and he underwent a kidney transplant. After the surgery, the doctor told her that for the next six years, his immune system would be as fragile as a child’s, and they would have to be vigilant at all times. Even a minor cold could cause complications or even death. He would also need to take anti-rejection medication for life.

He painfully endured the six years of danger and gradually entered a stable period. She cared for him like a baby, pampering him and encouraging him. Seven years later, she gave birth to a lovely daughter for him.

The long years were filled with endless pain and danger, but they held on to each other and made it through. Life was cruel, just the opposite of the scene on the cliff—it was her who pulled him, little by little, toward the end of life. Though there were several moments when she almost couldn’t hold on, she never let go. When he was in his most painful despair, she held his hand tightly and said, “You once said, once you’ve held on tight, you never let go. I won’t allow you to regret it now.”

Yes, love is like an invisible rope tying two people together at each end. Only by working together, facing hardships and pain with courage, and holding on to each other’s hearts tightly, never letting go, will the two hearts grow closer and closer until they completely merge into one.
