Lost Ring Love Story: Losing More Than Just a Ring
They had known each other for five years when he decided to go study in Japan. The day before he left, they were walking together along Jiefang Road. On the street, a little girl was selling rings, and she immediately took a liking to one. He insisted on paying for it and placed it on her finger. It was an 8-yuan ring, but to her, that moment felt sacred.
In March, he left. Before saying goodbye, he told her that he would come back to see her next Chinese New Year. If she was willing to meet him, she should wait under the tree on Xinjian Road on February 14th. He said, “Don’t lose the ring.”
In the fall, she lost the ring he gave her. She had promised to always wear it, but in a blink of an eye… it was gone. She was someone who valued perfection, and after losing the ring, though her feelings for him didn’t change, everything else did.
He did come back. On February 14th, she didn’t show up. The most important appointment of her life, and she didn’t have the courage to go. But she couldn’t resist asking a friend to go see him. Her friend had never met him before, but when she returned, she said she saw a boy in a trench coat standing under the tree, holding a red rose. That night, she cried until her pillow was soaked.
The next Valentine’s Day, she wandered aimlessly through the streets, and by evening, she somehow ended up on Xinjian Road.
Under the tree, a boy was leaning slightly. Her heart started pounding, and she couldn’t help but walk towards him. It was him!
He handed her the rose and said, “I knew I would finally wait for you this year.” She asked, “What if I hadn’t come?” He smiled and replied, “Then I’d come back next year.”
She never took the rose. As she turned to leave, she heard him ask from behind, “Do you still have the ring?” “I’m sorry, I lost it,” she said, unable to look at his face.
She never saw him again after that. Years passed, and she heard that he was getting married.
“I love you.” Those words had lingered in her heart for years, but she could never bring herself to tell him. Perhaps he only thought of her occasionally, but she had her reasons. A few years ago, while working on that lathe during her internship, she lost not just the ring he gave her, but her entire left hand.
