Field Mouse Story: Mrs. Field Mouse’s Necklace

As autumn was coming to an end, Mrs. Field Mouse began preparing food for the winter. The winter would be so long that she needed to gather plenty of food to last for herself and her babies. For many days, Mrs. Field Mouse went out to the fields early in the morning to search for food, gathering from dawn until dusk before heading home. Her clothes became dirty, her pants got torn by branches, and even her shoes were worn out, revealing her toes. But Mrs. Field Mouse was still very happy because she had found lots of food.

Mrs. Field Mouse packed the food into bottles and bags and brought them home. (She had gathered 6 bags of rice, 7 jars of peanuts, and 8 ears of corn.)

Taking advantage of the weather before it turned cold, Mrs. Field Mouse went for a walk in the woods. Suddenly, she found a necklace. “Wow, what a luxurious necklace! Since no one saw me pick it up, it must be mine!” she thought, happily putting the necklace around her neck.

On the street, Mrs. Field Mouse met Mrs. Hen, who immediately exclaimed, “Cluck, cluck! What a luxurious necklace! Is it yours? It’s a pity your clothes are so old. If you wore the dress I have here, it would be a perfect match! You can trade 4 bags of rice, 1 ear of corn, and 2 jars of peanuts with me for it.” Mrs. Field Mouse thought, “I’ve stored so much food; if I trade some, there should still be enough if we’re careful.”

So, Mrs. Field Mouse opened the cupboard, took out 4 bags of rice, 1 ear of corn, and 2 jars of peanuts, and hurriedly went to trade for the dress. Little Field Mouse was very worried, “How much food do we have left? Will it be enough for winter?” “Sigh, if we’re careful, it should be enough,” replied Mrs. Field Mouse.

Mrs. Field Mouse put on the beautiful dress, and the necklace looked even more luxurious. When Rabbit saw her, he said, “Wow! Your pants are torn, and they don’t match your necklace and dress at all. You can trade 2 bags of rice, 4 ears of corn, and 1 jar of peanuts with me for a new pair of pants.”

Mrs. Field Mouse quickly went home, opened the cupboard, and took out 2 bags of rice, 4 ears of corn, and 1 jar of peanuts. Little Field Mouse tugged at her, “Mom, Mom, there isn’t much food left. Don’t take any more!” Mrs. Field Mouse asked, “How much food do we have left in the cupboard?” There was no rice left, and the corn and peanuts were running low. But Mrs. Field Mouse thought about how her pants didn’t match the necklace, so she took the food and traded it for a new pair of pants.

Mrs. Field Mouse walked down the street with her head held high, so everyone could see the necklace around her neck. “Hee-hee, the necklace is luxurious, but your shoes have a hole in them, and your toes are sticking out! Hurry and trade 3 ears of corn and 4 jars of peanuts with me for a new pair of shoes!” Bear shouted.

Mrs. Field Mouse immediately went home, opened the cupboard, and thought, “If I trade 3 ears of corn and 4 jars of peanuts for shoes, how much corn and peanuts will be left in the cupboard?” Oh no! This was truly the last of Mrs. Field Mouse’s food. Mrs. Field Mouse hesitated, “Should I trade the last of our food for new shoes?” But then she thought about how she would look with a luxurious necklace around her neck and worn-out shoes with her toes sticking out, so she decided to trade the last 3 ears of corn and 4 jars of peanuts for new shoes. Little Field Mouse huddled in a corner, trembling, and asked in a low voice, “What will we eat when winter comes?” Mrs. Field Mouse said, “Maybe we’ll find some food when winter arrives.”

Winter came, and the north wind howled, bitterly cold. Little Field Mouse cried from hunger, and Mrs. Field Mouse, with no other choice, put on her luxurious necklace, new clothes, and new shoes, and went out into the snow to look for food. She was exhausted and hungry, but found nothing, eventually fainting in the snow.
