Short campus love story: The Lying Love

To their classmates, they seemed like a mismatched couple. She was a bright and pretty girl, while he was tall but quite ordinary-looking. Yet, she adored his silly and awkward demeanor.

Walking hand in hand, they had grown accustomed to the curious stares from others. She once told him, “I love you, forever and always.”

He would smile foolishly and sometimes reply, “I know, it’s enough to keep it in our hearts.”

But she would chase after him, insisting he say those words aloud, making him blush. Seeing his shy face, she would laugh at his bashfulness.

Their relationship faced opposition from her parents. She simply said she hadn’t found a “big cabbage,” but rather a “potential stock,” a seed with the potential to bloom.

In her heart, that’s exactly what he was. She believed that he would work hard to create a modest but cozy home for her.

However, as graduation approached, he showed no urgency in finding a job. Instead, he got hooked on games like “World of Warcraft” and “Happy Farm” with his classmates.

Every time she argued with him, he would sweet-talk her into calming down. But deep down, she felt sad. She didn’t want to believe that the person she had chosen could be so disappointing. The words she planned to tell him were left unspoken.

During her internship, she joined a decent company arranged by her family. He had heard from classmates that her family was well-off, with her parents holding official positions. But she always denied it, claiming her parents were working-class people who had struggled to put her through college. Therefore, she insisted on finding a man who could earn money and secure her future happiness. In the end, he was left unsure about what was true.

After graduation, he suggested visiting her home a few times, but she always found excuses to refuse. He began to feel uneasy, wondering if she had lost interest in him.

But she firmly replied, “If you visit now, what will you say? People expect a house and a car in a marriage—what do you have?” Her words left both of them feeling uncomfortable.

She often said things like that to push him, but he always responded by saying, “Summer break isn’t over yet. I’ll play for two more months, then I’ll find a good job and give you a life of luxury.”

As his job search remained stagnant, she grew tired of bringing it up. Besides, she was busy with many tasks at her new job. Meanwhile, someone had already started pursuing her—a colleague from her department who was attentive and caring. She even wondered if she should consider a new relationship for the sake of her future.

On weekends, when they were together, she didn’t avoid his calls, speaking sweetly on the phone with that colleague, her smile blooming like a flower. She dressed up meticulously for every date with her colleague, completely ignoring her boyfriend’s growing frustration.

All this was like a dagger, twisting in his heart. Though outsiders thought they were a happy couple, he was deeply hurt inside. No wonder people said that campus relationships are unreliable. No wonder his dorm mates said that college romances are only for fun, and taking them too seriously will only bring pain.

One night, she told him she was going home. He didn’t respond. Feeling frustrated alone in the dorm, he headed to a nearby bar and drank his sorrows away.

After a while, he noticed a car pulling up to the school gate—a sleek Audi A6. To his surprise, he saw her stepping out of the car, waving goodbye to the middle-aged man inside, saying, “Goodbye, Dad.”

He watched the car drive away, then saw her walking off. He pulled out his phone and asked where she was. Hearing the slurred speech, she angrily hung up.

He rushed out and grabbed her, demanding, “Why did you lie to me? Your family is so well-off, you have a luxury car, but you told me your parents were workers, making me think I needed to give you a life of luxury. Now, you’re cold and distant, playing with my feelings.”

She bit her lip, saying nothing, silently admitting to everything. After he finished his outburst, she could only say one thing: “What does it matter if my family is rich or poor? I want a rich life, and you can’t give it to me. Let’s break up.”

He was a proud man. A breakup? Fine. He immediately replied, “Alright, let’s never meet again.”

Within days, they had both left campus. She excelled at her job. He went south, joining an advertising company and quickly becoming the media director.

Many years later, at a class reunion, he brought a beautiful girlfriend and toasted her. She drank it all in one go. She had hidden her family’s wealth and claimed she wanted a rich life, hoping he would be inspired to work hard for her. But he didn’t. So, she resorted to harsh words to push him.

There’s a kind of love that lies, saying it doesn’t love when it does. There’s a kind of love that smiles outwardly but cries inside, saying “I wish you happiness,” sacrificing oneself to fulfill the other’s happiness.
