A rabbit lived in the city, and ever since he got a carrot, his life had changed. He carried it with him everywhere—he even held onto it when racing with other rabbits; wherever he went, he always had it with him, even when going on outings with other rabbits.
When winter arrived, the rabbit packed his things and decided to return to the countryside.
On the way, he dreamed of growing more carrots through hard work and the fertile soil. He thought: this is what a rabbit’s happy life should be like.
By the edge of the forest, the wind quietly rustled the bushes, and he encountered a snowman. The snowman stood alone in the snow.
They talked about the weather, the footprints in the snow, and shared both happy and unhappy thoughts. In truth, what the snowman wanted to talk about most was the carrot. Because he didn’t have a nose yet, he longed to have a carrot for a nose.
But the snowman didn’t speak his true thoughts. He considered that perhaps he could have other kinds of noses: a coal nose, a smoldering cigarette nose, a twig nose, a chili pepper nose, a bottle cap nose, or a rolled-up newspaper nose. Anything but a carrot nose, because he could tell at a glance that the carrot was the rabbit’s favorite thing.
As the rabbit was about to leave, he suddenly noticed that the snowman didn’t have a nose. He thought, without a nose, the snowman couldn’t smell anything, and this must be the most regrettable thing in his life.
So, without a second thought, the rabbit stuck the carrot onto the snowman’s face.
Before the snowman could figure out what had happened, the rabbit had already rolled away like a snowball, leaving the snowy field.
Standing alone in the vast snow, the snowman smelled the scent of carrot in the air and felt that he was the happiest snowman in the world.
A little bird, tired from flying, landed on the snowman’s carrot nose to rest.
They chatted about the weather, the footprints in the snow, and the rabbit’s carrot.
The bird got hungry, so the snowman let him peck at the carrot. It was such a nutritious carrot. For the snowman, having a bird perched on his nose was a very happy thing, and for the bird, standing on the snowman’s carrot nose was equally a very happy thing.
When spring arrived, the snowman melted into the soil.
The bird planted the remaining half of the carrot nose where the snowman had stood.
Without his carrot, the rabbit had nothing to do in the countryside, so he decided to return to city life.
When the rabbit passed through the forest, the wind still quietly rustled, but he could no longer see the snowman. Feeling a bit sad, the rabbit wiped his nose.
The bird came, for he had come to tend to the carrot sprout. In the place where the snowman once stood, the bird showed the rabbit a green carrot sprout. The bird said that the snowman had asked him to take care of it, and that it belonged to the rabbit.
