Children story about sharing: El’s New Blanket
One day, while out and about, a little mouse named El found a beautiful blanket. In reality, it was a little girl’s sock, lost while she was playing in the garden.
The blanket had pretty lace edges and a row of colorful flowers woven into it. The more El looked at it, the more he liked it. He dragged the blanket back to his little hole and laid it on his bed. Every night, he would fall asleep under the beautiful blanket, and even his dreams were sweet.
One day, his good friend, Dika, came over to visit. Dika immediately noticed the beautiful blanket on the bed. His eyes lit up as he exclaimed, “Wow, it’s so pretty! If my grandma had a tablecloth like this, she’d be so happy. El, where did you get it? I want to find one too.” El instantly grew nervous, afraid that Dika might take his treasure. He quickly said, “In the garden. I’m sure you can find one just like it there.” Dika smiled and said, “Thank you! I’ll go look for one tomorrow!” El breathed a sigh of relief.
That night, El lay under his blanket again, but he had trouble falling asleep. He thought about visiting Dika’s house, where he had met Dika’s grandmother. She was very old, with limited mobility, and could only stay at home knitting every day. She was very kind and had even offered them some food. Grandma loved knitting, and surely she would adore something so beautiful. As El thought about this, he drifted off to sleep.
The next day, El went out of his way to find Dika. Near the little garden, he saw Dika sitting dejectedly on a mound of dirt. El asked, “Dika, what’s wrong?”
Dika replied sadly, “I wanted to find a pretty little blanket to give my grandma as a birthday gift, but it seems hard to find one.” El felt sad too, but he didn’t say anything.
That evening, when El returned home, his mother noticed he was a bit unhappy and gently asked, “El, is something troubling you? You can tell Mommy.” El told his mother about the blanket.
His mother said, “The happiest thing isn’t having a treasure, but knowing that your actions have made someone else happy. That’s the greatest joy. Those who are kind will always be rewarded by the heavens.” After hearing his mother’s words, El thought for a moment and said, “Then I’ll give the blanket to Dika’s grandma as a birthday gift tomorrow!” His mother smiled and nodded.
Before bed, El carefully folded the blanket and tied it with a ribbon into a bow. He took out his old blanket and covered himself with it, sleeping soundly.
At the crack of dawn, El arrived at Dika’s house with the gift. “Knock, knock, knock.” It was Dika who opened the door, surprised to see El. El handed him the gift package and said, “This is a gift for your grandma from us!” Dika was overjoyed. The two friends ran hand in hand to grandma’s house. When grandma saw the beautiful blanket and her beloved grandchildren, she smiled from ear to ear and said it was the best birthday gift she had ever received.
Not long after, El and Dika were playing in the little garden again. Suddenly, the wind blew something down. Dika shouted, “Look, another little blanket has fallen down!” They ran over to take a look, and sure enough, it was an identical little blanket, with the same lace and a row of colorful flowers. El, who had made others happy, was truly rewarded by the heavens.
