Little Mouse Diudiu and the Coming Storm
One day, while driving back to the farm, the farmer heard a weather report on the radio—a powerful storm was expected to hit that night.
The first to learn about the storm was the farmer’s sheepdog. Jumping out of the farmer’s car, the dog rushed to the farm to warn everyone.
“What is a storm?” Little Mouse Diudiu asked curiously.
The bird said sadly, “When the storm comes, my nest might fall from the tree.”
The chick said fearfully, “When the storm comes, the thatched roof of my house might get struck by lightning and catch fire.”
The fish said nervously, “When the storm comes, the water in the pond will overflow onto the shore. If we little fish swim in the wrong direction, we might not find our way back to the pond and could die of thirst on the shore.”
The duck said sorrowfully, “When the storm comes, little ducks swimming could be sucked into a whirlpool and never swim back up.”
“So, storms are such scary things!” This was Little Mouse Diudiu’s first time experiencing a “storm,” and it went home full of worries.
During dinner, Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister were chatting and laughing as usual.
Little Mouse Diudiu said seriously, “I heard that a storm is coming.”
Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister glanced at Diudiu, then continued their conversation and laughter.
“Why aren’t they worried about the storm? Storms are really scary.” That night, Little Mouse Diudiu tossed and turned, unable to sleep in its little bed.
Suddenly, “knock, knock, knock,” there was a sound at the door.
Dad stretched with a big yawn and went to open the door—it was Uncle Field Mouse and his family. After the storm came, their home got flooded. They came to stay for the night.
By this time, Little Mouse Diudiu was so tired that it fell asleep groggily.
In its dream, the terrifying storm arrived. The entire farm was destroyed, and the little animals were crying, running around in panic. Little Mouse Diudiu couldn’t find Mom, Dad, Brother, or Sister anywhere and hid in a corner, crying in fear.
As it cried, Little Mouse Diudiu suddenly heard Mom’s voice. It opened its eyes and found itself in Mom’s arms, lying in its little bed at home!
“Diudiu, did you have a nightmare?” Mom asked with a smile.
“So, it was just a dream!” Little Mouse Diudiu rubbed its eyes and looked around, “Was Uncle Field Mouse’s family knocking at the door also a dream?”
“No, that was real, not a dream!”
“Ah, so where are they now?”
“They went back to their home!”
“But didn’t the storm flood their house?”
“Shortly after the storm passed, their home returned to its original state. If you don’t believe me, go see for yourself!”
Little Mouse Diudiu went outside, where the air was fresh, and the sun was shining brightly. The farm looked the same as yesterday, even cleaner.
On the way, Diudiu met the bird, the chick, the fish, and the duck. They were all playing together as usual! It turned out that the bird had gathered more twigs with its parents to reinforce their nest; the chick and its parents had replaced the thatched roof with a stone roof; the fish and its parents had stayed hidden at the bottom of the pond during the storm; and the duck had stayed home with its parents and hadn’t gone anywhere during the storm. Seeing that everyone was safe and sound, Little Mouse Diudiu felt very happy.
Uncle Field Mouse’s home was in a burrow by the field, and his family was busy cleaning up the burrow!
Wow, this scene looked so familiar! It turned out that yesterday, when Little Mouse Diudiu was out playing, Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister were digging a drainage ditch in front of the house, preparing for the storm!
Little Mouse Diudiu suddenly understood a lesson: as long as you make good preparations, storms are nothing to be afraid of.
Little Mouse Diudiu ran back home and, standing at the door, said loudly, “Mom, Dad, next time a storm is coming, you have to let me help with the preparations too!”
