A Heartwarming Campus Love Stories: Just Want to Hold Your Hand

Wen Jing was a student who had made it into a university in Beijing from a remote mountain village. Her plain, rustic appearance subjected her to endless mockery. However, she didn’t care about what others said. She only focused on her studies. She wanted to bring honor to her hometown and make her parents proud. Her grades were always the best in the class, and gradually, she made some new friends. However, she could never fully immerse herself in the bustling city life.

One day, a rebellious boy transferred into her class. He wasn’t there to study; his parents simply wanted him to stay out of trouble by keeping him in school.

The students in the class gossiped endlessly about him, each with their own version of his story. But the most common belief was that he was a rich second-generation heir, a spoiled playboy. His parents had donated a significant amount of money to the school to get him in.

The boy was seated near Wen Jing. As soon as he sat down, he mischievously greeted her, “Hey! Country girl, how are you?”

Wen Jing calmly glanced at him and continued with her review.

The boy leaned closer and said, “My name’s You Shuai. What’s your name, country girl?”

Without lifting her head, Wen Jing replied, “Boring.”

You Shuai chuckled and said, “Hmph! The country girl’s got some attitude.”

Wen Jing had no idea that her nightmare was just beginning. From that day on, You Shuai would find every excuse to talk to her, squeeze in beside her in the cafeteria, and follow her around, driving Wen Jing crazy with annoyance.

What embarrassed Wen Jing the most was that everyone thought You Shuai had taken a liking to her and was pursuing her, which made many of the other girls both jealous and resentful. But Wen Jing knew in her heart that, given her appearance, figure, and plain attire, the idea that a rich kid like You Shuai could like her was laughable.

Wen Jing tried her best to avoid him, minimizing their interactions as much as possible. But no matter how much she tried to dodge him, he would always appear in front of her every day.

One day, he even blocked her dorm room door and said, “Let’s date!”

Wen Jing was stunned, a feeling of being mocked surged within her. Angrily, she said, “Stop joking with me.” She turned to leave, but You Shuai grabbed her hand and said, “I really like you. I love watching you think, love the expression on your face when you’re focused on class. All these things fascinate me and make me admire you. I’ve often thought, if you could treat me with the same dedication as you treat your studies, I’d be the happiest person alive!”

Wen Jing snapped, “You’re crazy!” She slammed the door in his face. Leaning against the door, Wen Jing felt her heart pounding wildly, a strange feeling stirring deep inside her. But she shook her head, refusing to believe any of it was real. She convinced herself that his love was nothing but a fleeting whim, a temporary thrill. Once he had won her over, he would carelessly toss her aside.

From that point on, Wen Jing tried to stick with her friends, not giving him any chance to interact with her alone.

Sure enough, You Shuai changed. He almost gave up on his games with her, turning his attention to flirting with other girls. But every now and then, he would cast a meaningful look at her, a look filled with a sadness she couldn’t quite understand.

Wen Jing ignored him and headed to the sports field. Just then, a stray ball struck her head, knocking her to the ground and sending her glasses flying. She groped around but couldn’t find them.

At that moment, a pair of hands helped her up and gently said, “Stop looking, your glasses are broken. I’ll take you to get a new pair.” Without her glasses, Wen Jing felt as if she’d lost her sight; everything was blurry. She could only let these gentle hands guide her forward, while a voice softly warned her, “Watch the steps, careful of the slope, mind your step…”

Wen Jing couldn’t resist slipping her hand into her backpack and secretly taking out an old pair of glasses to put on. As soon as she could see clearly, she realized that it was You Shuai holding her hand, his other hand still clutching her perfectly intact glasses.

Seeing that she had put on her glasses, You Shuai awkwardly let go of her hand and said, “Sorry, I… I just wanted to hold your hand for a little while. I didn’t mean to deceive you.”

After a long silence, Wen Jing quietly removed her glasses and extended her hand, a trusting smile on her face.

She thought maybe she should give love a chance, even if this love might only bring her pain.
