Mountain goblin story: Listen, to the Sounds of Autumn
In the morning, the mountain goblin Balai woke up and heard the “whoosh—whoosh—whoosh” sound of the wind outside the window.
“It’s getting cold!” Balai shivered a little, then stuck his head out from under the blanket and perked up his ears to listen carefully. “Time to get up!” Balai stretched lazily, got out of bed, dressed, and stepped outside. The sun had just risen.
Suddenly, a “thud—thud—thud” sound reached Balai’s ears.
“What is that sound?” Balai discovered that several pears had fallen from the pear tree in front of his house.
“Oh, just right for breakfast!” Balai walked to the tree, picked up the pears, and noticed they hadn’t gotten bruised at all because they had landed on a thick layer of fallen leaves. Balai wiped the pears with his sleeve, took a bite, and found them deliciously sweet!
At that moment, a “flap—flap—flap” sound came from the sky. Balai looked up and saw a flock of geese flying in a “V” formation toward the distance.
“Goodbye, goodbye!” Balai waved to the geese in the sky. “Let’s take a walk in the woods,” he thought, as he continued to munch on the pears.
As Balai walked into the quiet forest, a “rustle—rustle—rustle” sound arose at his feet. He carefully crouched down and picked up a freshly fallen leaf.
Balai stopped and noticed a row of tall trees. The leaves on the trees looked like golden butterflies, gently fluttering down. A little girl stood among the golden leaves, tilting her head back, quietly listening…
It was the mountain goblin Nara!
“What brings you here?” Balai ran over to ask.
“Shh!” Nara gestured for Balai to speak more softly and move more gently.
Balai followed the direction Nara pointed and listened. “Chirp, chirp, chirp”—a family of squirrels was busy gathering food for the winter in the tall trees, occasionally making chirping sounds.
“I came to listen to the sounds of autumn. What about you?” Nara whispered.
“Me too.” Balai’s feet lightly stepped on the “carpet” of fallen leaves, making a “crunch—crunch” sound.
“Shh!” Nara lifted her head, closed her eyes, and listened quietly to those enchanting sounds…
