Bear Story For Kids: The Big Bear and the Little Bear
“Mom, why are we having carrots again today?” Little Bear Huihui couldn’t help but complain when he saw the table full of orange-red dishes.
Mama Bear had harvested a bumper crop of carrots, so they had been eating carrot dishes for several meals: carrot rice, carrot soup, stir-fried carrots, roasted carrots, carrot salad… Although there were various ways to prepare them, they all tasted similar, and Huihui was getting tired of it.
“Carrots are delicious and nutritious; you should eat more!” Mama Bear said.
“I don’t want to eat them, I’m tired of them, I’m going out to find something else to eat.” In a huff, Little Bear Huihui walked out of the house.
Mama Bear quickly tried to pull Little Bear back, but Papa Bear said calmly, “Let the child go, it’s not a bad thing for him to have his own ideas.”
However, Huihui didn’t come back even when it got dark. Now Mama Bear and Papa Bear were really worried. They immediately went out to search, combing through the entire forest until finally, Papa Bear found Huihui in a small tree hole.
Papa Bear extended his hand, “Come on, Huihui, let’s go home!”
Huihui didn’t move, “I’m too hungry to walk.”
“Didn’t you find anything to eat?”
“It was all stuff I don’t like, and the things I wanted I couldn’t catch!”
“Alright then, hop on Daddy’s shoulders, and I’ll carry you home.”
With that, Papa Bear crouched down.
It had been a long time since Huihui had ridden on his dad’s shoulders. He braced his arms on his dad’s broad back, gave a little hop, and his legs were soon straddling his dad’s shoulders.
“Dad, why do I feel like you’re not as tall as before? It’s much easier to hop onto your shoulders now,” Huihui wondered.
Papa Bear smiled knowingly, “That’s because you’ve grown taller!”
Papa Bear paused for a moment, then with a grunt of effort, wobbled to his feet.
“Dad, your back doesn’t seem as straight as it used to be!”
“Of course, you’ve gotten a lot heavier.”
A full moon slowly climbed above the treetops, and father and son, accompanied by the moonlight, began their journey home.
Huihui sat on his dad’s shoulders, feeling as though he had suddenly grown taller. He could see far down the road ahead, and with a stretch of his hand, he could touch the leaves of the trees.
“When will I be tall enough to reach this high on my own?”
“As long as you eat well every day, you’ll grow taller than Dad in no time!”
Gurgle, gurgle—just talking about food made Huihui’s stomach growl.
“Dad, why are you walking so slowly? My stomach is growling with hunger!”
“I hear it, but Daddy’s eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be, so I have to be careful with every step while carrying you.”
The moon rose higher and higher, its gentle light spilling onto the forest path and onto Papa Bear and Little Bear.
“Hey, Dad, it looks like there’s a moon hiding in your hair!”
Little Bear noticed a faint glow reflecting off the bare patches on his dad’s head, where the sparse hair showed his shiny scalp.
“Hehe, there used to be a little rascal who loved sitting on Daddy’s shoulders. His favorite thing was to tug on Daddy’s hair, and over time, it got all rubbed off.”
Huihui hugged his dad’s neck, “It’s all my fault for being so naughty. Why did I never notice this before?”
“That’s because you’ve grown up,” Papa Bear turned his head, smiling with satisfaction. “Now you can see many things you didn’t notice before!”
“Yes, Dad, I’ve grown up. I can walk home on my own now!”
Huihui slid down his dad’s back, suddenly feeling full of energy.
“And I think my appetite has grown too. I could eat a whole pot of carrots right now!”
“Hahaha…” Papa Bear laughed heartily, “Carrots are good to eat, but tonight we don’t have to, because this afternoon, Mama caught a salmon from the river, your favorite.”
Under the moonlight, the big bear and the little bear walked home, where Mama Bear was waiting for them!
