Froggy Story: Froggy’s Birthday

In a few days, Froggy will be celebrating its birthday, and this is its very first one since it was born. Froggy’s mom and dad promised that on its birthday, they would buy it a whole bunch of toys and snacks, letting it eat and play to its heart’s content. They would also take it on a tour of the entire lotus pond and then to the water chestnut bay for a refreshing bath.

Froggy looked at its excited parents, patiently listened to them croaking away, and then blinked and said, “Mom, Dad, I want to have a special birthday party and invite Little Fish, Little Shrimp, and Little Crab to come and sing, dance, and play games with me. Wouldn’t that be so much fun?”

“Wow! That’s a great idea!” Froggy’s mom and dad jumped up with joy.

So, Froggy and its parents began decorating their home, which was built with red coral. They changed the curtains to ones made of lotus leaves, spread out a carpet made of water grass, and covered the walls with colorful little shells. Even the path leading to their house was paved with various types of rain flower stones.

Tomorrow is Froggy’s birthday. It sat by the phone, sending out invitations to its friends:

“Hello, Little Fish? Come to my birthday party tomorrow.”

“Hello, Little Shrimp? Come to my birthday party tomorrow.”

“Hello, Little Crab? Tomorrow’s my birthday; come to my party!”

As Froggy was making calls, it suddenly realized that it didn’t have Little Swan’s phone number. Froggy hopped over to ask its mom, “Mom, how do I invite Little Swan?”

Little Swan wasn’t Froggy’s friend—in fact, Little Swan didn’t even know Froggy. But Froggy knew Little Swan. Almost every day, Froggy would sit quietly by the lake, mesmerized by Little Swan’s dance performances. Sometimes, it would watch from sunrise until sunset. Froggy had become a huge fan of Little Swan.

Before Froggy’s mom could answer, Granny Catfish, who was visiting, shouted, “What? You want to invite Little Swan? Haha…”

Grandpa Catfish coughed a couple of times and joined in, “Don’t be silly, Froggy. Little Swan is like an angel of the lake, flying around in the sky all day. You’re not even friends. Even if you carried her in a sedan chair, she wouldn’t come.”

Granny Catfish continued, “There was a toad who hung a picture of a swan, and it became a joke that spread around, with people saying, ‘A toad trying to eat swan meat!’”

Hearing what Granny and Grandpa Catfish said, Froggy hesitated. But deep down, it really wanted to invite Little Swan to its birthday party.

Froggy’s dad noticed what was on his mind and said, “How will you know what Little Swan thinks unless you try?”

“Yes, son, take your sincere heart and give it a try,” Froggy’s mom encouraged him.

When Froggy’s mom was young, she had also been a fan of swan dancing. Playing, dancing, and singing with a swan had always been her beautiful dream. She even hoped to become good friends with the beautiful swans. But because she was shy and timid, she had buried these thoughts deep inside. Now, looking back, she felt it was such a pity. Froggy’s mom didn’t want her son to have the same regrets.

With his parents’ encouragement, Froggy gathered his courage, took the invitation made from pink lotus petals, and knocked on Little Swan’s door.

The door opened, and the beautiful Little Swan appeared at the entrance, smiling at Froggy. Froggy mustered all its courage and said loudly, “Little Swan, please come to my birthday party tomorrow.” Saying this, Froggy handed over the invitation with both hands.

“Sure, thank you! I’m happy to be invited, and I’ll definitely come,” Little Swan replied cheerfully, much to Froggy’s surprise.

Because of Little Swan’s presence, Froggy’s birthday was especially joyful. And later on, they truly became the best of friends.
