The Kitten Story: The Kitten Selling Fish

One Sunday, Little Kitten followed her mother to the river to go fishing. Look at them go—they’re quite impressive! In just two hours, they caught almost half a bucket of fish.

“Meow! Sweetie, let’s head back home. Your dad and Little Black must be getting anxious,” Mama Cat suggested.

So, Little Kitten and Mama Cat carried the fish back home. As soon as they reached the doorstep, Papa Cat eagerly came out to greet them. “I’ve been waiting for you two! How did it go? How many fish did you catch?”

“The fish were biting really well today—they kept going for our hooks,” Little Kitten said happily. “We caught just enough for each of us to eat 7 fish. Dad, can you guess how many fish we caught today?”

“Oh, you’re testing me, huh? You won’t stump your old dad! We have 8 cats in our family, and if each eats 7 fish, that’s 8×7, which equals 56. So, you must have caught 56 fish, right?”

“Hooray for Dad!” Little Black Cat chimed in as well.

“Wife, we have too many fish—we can’t eat them all. How about we have Little Kitten and Little Black sell some of them?” suggested Papa Cat.

“Great idea!” Mama Cat agreed.

“How many fish should we sell?” asked Little Kitten.

“If each of us eats 3 fish, that will be enough. Sell the rest,” said Papa Cat. With that, Papa Cat and Mama Cat left.

Little Kitten and Little Black Cat looked at each other and said in unison, “I know how many we should sell!”

“I’ll go first!” Little Kitten quickly said, “We have 8 cats, and if each eats 3 fish, that’s 8×3, which equals 24. So, the number of fish we should sell is 56-24=32 fish.”

“Exactly! But I thought of it a little differently,” said Little Black Cat. “Originally, each cat would eat 7 fish, but now each will only eat 3 fish. That means each cat will sell 7-3=4 fish. So, for 8 cats, we should sell 8×4=32 fish.”

“You’re both right. Go ahead and sell the fish,” said their parents, who had been secretly listening nearby.

“Let’s go now!” said the two sisters happily as they set off.
