Short Fairy Tale About Love: Trapped by Love
His heart had never truly been at peace because of Xin He; he was just good at hiding it. Every time he saw Xin He smile only in the presence of Feng Zai, it felt like someone was ruthlessly gripping his heart. He knew that Xin He had always liked only Feng Zai, and in her eyes, there was no other man but Feng Zai. Fine! Then he would let go. As long as Xin He could be happy, that would make him happy too.
But could Feng Zai bring happiness to Xin He when he had another woman in his heart? How could he truly let go without clarifying this? How could he entrust Xin He to him with peace of mind?
He wasn’t the only one trapped by love.
On the eve of Feng Zai and Xin He’s wedding, En Zai had drunk quite a bit. His “Golden Goblet” bar had reopened, only now there were two owners instead of one.
It was evening, and the bar had few customers. Soft, soothing music flowed gently through the air.
Feng Zai, standing behind the bar, noticed that En Zai was drinking more and more aggressively, so he walked over and took the glass from En Zai’s hand. “En Zai, you’ve had too much. What’s wrong with you today?”
En Zai looked at Feng Zai, his face already showing signs of intoxication. “Han Zhibao…what should we do?”
“What did you say?” Han Zhibao was Feng Zai’s pain, a pain that reached deep into his soul.
Seeing Feng Zai’s silence, En Zai pushed him away and shouted, “Why are you marrying her? Do you truly love Xin He? Isn’t it your guilt and remorse that’s making you marry her? You don’t have any romantic feelings for Shang Xin He at all. What you’re doing will only hurt her—”
“I will try to love Xin He.” Yes, Feng Zai would try to forget Bao’er and fall in love with Xin He. Isn’t love something that can be cultivated?
“But what about Han Zhibao? What will happen to her…”
“That’s her business; I can’t plan her future.”
En Zai looked at Feng Zai in disbelief. Was this really something Feng Zai would say? Impossible, absolutely impossible. With a loud thud, En Zai collapsed onto the bar, completely drunk.
Feng Zai moved En Zai to a private room at the back of the bar and then, with En Zai’s car, sped recklessly down the road. Tomorrow, he was marrying Shang Xin He. His relationship with Han Zhibao would be completely over. This was his choice, so why did his heart hurt so much?
Feng Zai’s car stopped again at the entrance of the orphanage. This time, he didn’t get out. Through the car window, he saw Bao’er playing games with a group of children. Wasn’t this life suitable for her? The once stubborn girl, full of thorns, was long gone. Now, she was full of love, radiating it to everyone around her.
Han Zhibao had indeed changed a lot. Since being with Feng Zai, she had become more and more like a gentle and serene girl. She had grown her hair long, started wearing dresses, and even wore low-heeled shoes.
All these changes were because of him, and Feng Zai’s heart tightened. Bao’er, goodbye!
As if she heard his thoughts, Han Zhibao suddenly looked up. Because of the tinted windows, he could see her, but she couldn’t see him. Feng Zai watched as Bao’er took a boy by the hand and started walking toward the car, prompting him to start the car and drive away.
In the rearview mirror, Zhibao stood at the gate of the orphanage, staring at his car for a long time.
It was past two in the morning when he returned to the Shang household, but the light in Xin He’s room was still on. Feng Zai knew that Xin He was waiting for him. She couldn’t sleep without him by her side. As soon as he reached the door, Xin He ran over and hugged him tightly. “Where have you been?”
“I was at the bar.” Feng Zai held Xin He as they walked to the bed. He pulled back the covers, took off her shoes, and tucked her in. Gently patting the blanket, he said, “Sleep now, you’re the bride. If you don’t sleep, you won’t look good tomorrow.”
“Then don’t leave.” Xin He clutched Feng Zai’s hand, pleading.
Feng Zai grasped her hand in return and said, “I won’t leave. Sleep well.”
Only then did Shang Xin He close her eyes with a sense of peace.
Feng Zai looked out the window. The sky was still full of stars, but they no longer sparkled.
