Fairy Tale of Love: A Second of Romance
On the train, sitting across from me was a mother and her young son. As dusk approached, both of them started to become restless. The boy pressed his face flat against the window, eagerly looking outside.
After a while, the distant rumble of another train could be heard. The boy, still glued to the window, shouted excitedly, “It’s coming! It’s coming! Dad’s train is coming!” The mother leaned her upper body even closer to the glass, pressing herself tightly against it.
Our carriage suddenly fell silent, and the boy, trembling with excitement, held up a drawing of a cake against the window. Next to the cake, there were words written in rosy letters: “Take care, my love!” These four words conveyed all the longing and concern that a wife felt for her husband.
Soon, train T91 approached. In the fleeting moment when the two trains passed each other, I saw the boy waving his drawing and shouting for his father. The woman, trying hard to restrain herself from jumping up, quietly remained pressed against the window.
Really, it was just a moment, perhaps a second, and the brief encounter between T91 and T79 was over. The boy, exhilarated, stepped away from the window, but his mother remained frozen in place. Suddenly, the son hugged his mother tightly and said, “I saw Dad! Dad smiled at me!” The mother simply smiled, nodding silently to tell her son that she too had seen him and was just as happy.
What kind of romance is more real and moving, more earth-shattering? We’ve seen candlelit dinners and roses, but they don’t move us; our hearts don’t swell with gratitude because of love. This second of romance, so simple and unpretentious, deeply stirs the heart. If I had a lover, I would give my all for that one second. Because, in that second, the heart feels secure, love is dependable, and happiness rests firmly in the palm of your hand.
