Lion Stories: The Arrogant Little Lion
One day, a little antelope was grazing on the grasslands when suddenly, a little lion sprang out, hands on hips, and arrogantly said to the antelope, “This grassland belongs to my family, you’re not allowed to eat here.”
The little antelope replied, “This grassland belongs to everyone; how could it be yours?”
The little lion roared angrily, “My dad is the king of the grasslands, so everything here belongs to my family.”
The little antelope had no choice but to leave quietly.
Later, a little elephant saw that the fruit on a tree had ripened and fallen to the ground. As it began to eat the sweet fruit, the little lion ran over again and said, “Who allowed you to eat the fruit from this tree? You’re not allowed to eat it; this fruit belongs to my family.”
The little elephant said, feeling wronged, “How can this be yours? This fruit belongs to everyone, and besides, it fell off the tree by itself.”
The little lion, looking fierce, said, “Even if it falls to the ground, it still belongs to my family, and you’re not allowed to eat it.”
The little elephant walked away angrily.
A group of beautiful butterflies was busy working in the flower bushes when the little lion came to disrupt them. He kept chasing the butterflies, making it impossible for them to land and gather pollen. As he chased them, he kept shouting, “Mine, mine, it’s all mine! None of you can touch anything without my permission.”
The poor butterflies were driven away by the arrogant little lion.
Later, the little lion’s father was dethroned because he mismanaged the kingdom, leaving the grasslands in a terrible mess. The little lion could no longer bully the other animals.
The new king of the grasslands was very kind and hardworking, and he managed the entire grassland very well. The animals were all happy that they no longer had to suffer the little lion’s bullying. One day, the little lion, now all alone, came to the grassland and began to eat some fruit from a tree. As he ate, he suddenly saw the little elephant, the little antelope, and the other animals he had once bullied approaching him. The little lion remembered how he used to bully them and thought, “They must be coming to take revenge.”
Just as he was about to turn and walk away, the little elephant called out to him, “Come join us and eat!”
The little lion widened his eyes and asked, “Can I… can I really eat with you?” The other animals all said together, “Of course! The grassland belongs to everyone.”
The little lion lowered his head in embarrassment.
Some things belong to you, and some things belong to everyone, like the grassland, which belongs to everyone. We can’t own everything in the world, but having friends makes us happier. Just like the little lion in the story, who drove all the other animals away—no one wanted to play with him, and he ended up feeling lonely and sad!
