Owl story: The Timid Owl

There were many, many owls living in the forest.

Every night, they would happily fly around in the sky. But there was one little owl…

He was very afraid of flying at night. He always imagined the trees turning into monsters, all coming to grab him.

Distant mountains also transformed into giant creatures, ready to push him down.

Sometimes, the little owl would muster up the courage to fly with everyone else, but he would hurry back home after just a short while.

No one had ever heard of an owl being afraid of the dark. “Yes, if you keep this up, you’ll never grow up,” the other owls told him.

One night, some shepherds brought a flock of sheep into the forest.

They lit a fire and planned to rest for a while. The little owl, wanting to see the beautiful firelight, approached the flock.

A sheep noticed him.

“Hi there, are you watching the firelight? It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Yes, very beautiful,” the little owl nodded.

“The firelight is certainly beautiful, but the morning sun is even more beautiful.”

“Really? I’ve never seen the morning sun before.”

The little owl really wanted to see the morning sun with his own eyes.

“Of course! Do you want to go to the mountain to watch the sunrise with me?”

The sun was truly beautiful. They sat quietly together, watching the sun slowly rise above the treetops. The sky gradually became brighter and brighter!

Suddenly, the little owl flew up. “Follow me!”

He wanted to get closer to the sun to see it more clearly. The sheep hurried to follow. They reached a clearing where the strong sunlight shone right through.

“Wow, so dazzling,” the little owl exclaimed. His head spun, and he fell from the sky. “Be careful!” Fortunately, the sheep caught him with its soft back.

They returned to the cave in the forest. The sheep stayed by the little owl’s side until he was no longer dizzy. By then, the surroundings had become darker. “What should I do? My flock is gone,” the sheep became anxious.

The little owl suddenly flew up. “Follow me!” This time, it was his turn to help the sheep. The little owl led the sheep, searching everywhere for the flock. In the darkness, he kept flying, not afraid at all. Finally, they found the flock. The sheep said, “Thank you.” The little owl replied, “You’re welcome. I should thank you too.”

With that, the little owl flew alone into the dark night sky.

From that day on, the little owl grew up. He was no longer afraid of the night and flew happily and bravely in the dark forest, just like the other owls.

Children often experience various fears at different stages of their lives. My second child was afraid of the dark for a while after another child scared him by saying there were monsters. I spent time with him counting stars and watching the moon at night, and it dispelled his fears. This story can also help children build confidence.
