A Love Stories: beauty in flaws

They were college classmates, and he fell in love with her gentle and kind nature. The only slight flaw was the coin-sized brown birthmark on her left cheek.

In the early days of their relationship, she tentatively asked him if she should have the birthmark removed. He irritably told her that he loved her for more than just her appearance; he loved her, including the birthmark she was born with. Moved, she cried in his arms.

After graduating from college, they got married and brought his widowed mother from the countryside to live with them. He gradually worked his way up from a junior employee to the position of department manager.

With his career advancing, his social engagements increased.

Once, he had to attend an event with his wife. She went without makeup, wearing a simple work outfit. Amidst the glamorous crowd, she became an awkward note.

For the first time, he found her birthmark glaringly obvious.

That night, he gently suggested that she could have the birthmark removed; it wouldn’t cost much. She didn’t respond, and he didn’t see the tear that slipped down her birthmark.

The next day, she was gone, leaving a note for him: “If you no longer love me, even removing the birthmark won’t change anything. We might as well get a divorce.” The man began to seriously think about this.

However, he soon realized that all he could remember were her good qualities. They were imprinted on his heart, like the birthmark, never to be erased.

Regretful, he hurried to her mother’s house. When she saw him, her eyes were swollen from crying. She handed him a drafted divorce agreement. He grabbed it and tore it up, then held the astonished woman in his arms. He said, “We should have a child.” Once again, she cried.

The following winter, his mother-in-law was beaming, holding her three-month-old chubby grandson. She noticed that her daughter-in-law’s birthmark was gone. The man nervously explained that he truly no longer minded the birthmark. The woman smiled and snuggled sweetly into his arms, saying, “Since the birthmark didn’t affect your love for me, why shouldn’t I choose to be a little more beautiful?” He felt relieved.

It turns out, love can indeed make a woman more beautiful. Equally beautiful are the birthmarks that witness the journey of their love.
