Beautiful romantic tale: Youthful love and friendship

Cao Xuanyuan was sitting in front of her computer chatting when her phone suddenly rang. She picked it up and saw that it was a message from Lin Feng. “Huh? Shouldn’t he be looking for my sister?” She opened it and saw that Lin Feng wanted to invite her to dinner. He had something he needed her help with and arranged to meet her at the Overpass Rice Noodles restaurant on East Street at 4 PM.

“Okay,” she replied immediately without asking what it was about.

Lin Feng liked Cao Xuanyuan’s sister, Cao Ting, but Cao Ting didn’t seem to feel the same way. They were in the same class in their third year of high school. Although they didn’t talk much, he was still attracted to her. He had expressed his feelings to her during chats, but she always rejected him. Still, he didn’t give up.

After graduation, he invited her out to play, and she brought along her younger sister. Unlike her sister, Cao Xuanyuan was very outgoing and talkative.

For their first date, he wore a white T-shirt, light blue jeans, and blue sneakers. He had a fair face, black hair, and looked neat and clean. Upon their first meeting, Cao Xuanyuan said to her sister in front of him, “Not bad at all!” He smiled and unconsciously touched the back of his head.

Throughout the entire time, it was Cao Xuanyuan who kept talking non-stop. She seemed very excited. Lin Feng wanted to find an opportunity to talk to Cao Ting, but Cao Xuanyuan’s words kept coming one after another like pearls on a broken string.

Every time they went out after that, Cao Ting would bring along Cao Xuanyuan, who was always happy to join. But Cao Ting never showed any affection toward Lin Feng, whereas Cao Xuanyuan always seemed very cheerful.

At 3:30 PM, Cao Xuanyuan was already heading out with her sunshade. When she reached the designated spot and was putting away her umbrella, Lin Feng came in right behind her.

“Brother Lin Feng,” she called out. Although her sister hadn’t agreed, she went ahead and called him brother.

“Um…” Lin Feng was caught off guard by her sudden greeting.

“What do you need me for?” she asked while eating her rice noodles.

Lin Feng took a fluffy little monkey and a well-packaged gift from the bag he was carrying and handed them to her. “This little monkey is for you, and please give this to your sister. If I give it to her, she might not accept it.”

“There’s something for me too!” Cao Xuanyuan gladly accepted it.

“Sigh! I don’t know what kind of person my sister likes. Such a good person is right in front of her, and she doesn’t know how to cherish it!”

Lin Feng said nothing.

“Sigh! Brother Lin Feng, you’ve been pursuing my sister for almost half a year now, right? Why bother? There are plenty of other fish in the sea!” Lin Feng didn’t know how to respond to her.

“Sigh! I don’t understand what you all are thinking.” After finishing her meal, she added another comment.

On their way back, they walked together under her sunshade, walking very slowly, even slower than usual. She suddenly became quiet, occasionally glancing at Lin Feng. Lin Feng also remained silent. They walked quietly, each lost in their own thoughts.

After a while, Cao Xuanyuan noticed a few beads of sweat on Lin Feng’s fair forehead, like dewdrops on morning grass.

“Are you hot?” she asked.

Lin Feng nodded.

“Then come under the umbrella.”

“No, no,” Lin Feng quickly refused.

“It’s okay, consider it a thank you for the gift.” She said as she raised the umbrella over Lin Feng’s head.

Lin Feng immediately felt embarrassed, his face turned red, and he didn’t know what to say. Since Lin Feng was taller, she had to hold the umbrella high. When Lin Feng offered to hold it, she refused.

“Do we look like a couple?” Cao Xuanyuan quickly glanced at Lin Feng and then looked away just as quickly. Lin Feng stammered, unable to say anything, while more beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.

“Hehe, just kidding, look how nervous you are.”

“I’m not nervous, why would I be nervous? There’s nothing to be nervous about.”

Seeing his reaction, Cao Xuanyuan wanted to laugh but didn’t. Then they fell silent again.

When she got home, she threw the gift to her sister without caring what was inside and went to her room with the little monkey. She sat in front of her computer in a daze for a while, then suddenly picked up her phone. She stared at it for a long time before sending a message.

Lin Feng’s phone rang, and when he saw it was from Cao Xuanyuan but with no content, he didn’t reply.

The summer vacation ended quickly. Lin Feng and Cao Ting went to different places for their studies, and Cao Xuanyuan entered her third year of high school. They often texted each other to check on each other, but it was Lin Feng texting Cao Ting, Cao Ting texting Cao Xuanyuan, and Cao Xuanyuan texting Lin Feng.

As those innocent days dwindled, the texts became fewer and fewer, until no one remembered when they had stopped, just like a spring rain from last year that no one could recall when it started or ended, leaving everything unresolved, much like our youth.

We are destined to miss a spring rain and miss a certain someone.
