School Romance Story: The Light that Warms a Lifetime

That year, I was in my second year of high school. As the college entrance exam approached, the school had almost canceled all holidays for the second and third-year students. Additionally, we had six evening study sessions a week.

My home was quite far from the school, and there was a nearly hundred-meter-long dirt road along the way. It was manageable during the day, but at night, that stretch of dirt road had no streetlights and few pedestrians, making it unsettling for someone as timid as me.

After much persuasion, my father agreed to pick me up after evening study sessions, finally easing my anxiety. But it was hard on my father, who, in his prime, canceled all his evening engagements except for Saturdays. Every night, rain or shine, he would be at the school gate on time to take me home. No matter how dark the night was, as soon as I saw my father’s figure by the roadside, my anxious heart would instantly calm down.

One rainy autumn night, the moon was dark, and the wind was high. After evening study, the rain finally stopped, but I didn’t see my familiar figure when I looked around. Perhaps my father was delayed by something or was on his way? After the students dispersed and the road became empty, I reluctantly rode my bike home alone.

When I reached the dirt road, my father was still nowhere to be seen. I felt a chill down my spine and resented him, almost to the point of tears. A leaf suddenly fell from a tree and landed on my head, startling me into a scream. With no other option, I had to brave the dirt road myself. Just as I decided to speed up, I heard a car horn behind me.

I had to stop and let the annoying car pass. I had no good impressions of drivers; some would speed up on the puddled road, splashing mud all over pedestrians, and then drive off, honking gleefully. Strangely, this car just sat there with its headlights on, not moving forward. Was the driver waiting for me to enter the dirt road so they could speed up and splash me with mud?

I hesitated for a moment, but seeing the headlights illuminating the dark road, I decided to race the car. I knew the rain-soaked dirt road was uneven and not easy for a car to drive quickly. As long as I pedaled hard, the driver might not be able to splash me with water.

Besides, the driver inadvertently did me a favor by lighting up the once pitch-black road ahead. I glanced back at the car and then surged forward. I pedaled and pedaled until my legs ached, not daring to slack off. My bike made clunking sounds on the rough road.

Sure enough, the car fell behind. After I crossed the dirt road, I noticed the car turned and drove down another path.

I suddenly understood the driver’s intention. This kind driver just wanted to light up the dark road for a girl. My heart felt warm all the way home. When I got back, I found out my father had a fever and was resting in bed. My mother was at home taking care of him.

To this day, the headlights from that night still warm my memory. Although I never saw the driver’s face or knew if they were male or female, that light of love was like the sun. Every time I think of it, it warms my heart instantly.
