nest story: The Empty Bird’s Nest

A small wooden house hangs in the sky, how magical and interesting it is. Look: that bird’s nest on the tall, straight poplar tree, from afar it looks like a girl dressed in green carrying a round basket. The small basket sways gently in the wind, like a hat floating in a green ocean.

Sometimes, a small bird flies in, perching quietly on the top of the bird’s nest for a while, then resolutely flies away.

At other times, a flock of birds flies in, perching around the bird’s nest, chirping intermittently, and then they all fly away one by one.

But no bird ever stays and lives in this beautiful and sturdy bird’s nest.

Yet, what a delicate and lovely nest it is: the framework made of tough thick branches, the nest body woven with soft twigs, the top covered with slender vines, the bottom lined with smooth leaves, the bed made of fragrant petals, and warm feathers serving as the quilt.

The nest faces south, letting the bright sunlight shine inside like twinkling stars.

The eaves extend outward from the top of the nest, shielding it from rain and snow like a house’s roof.

Look around the bird’s nest: behind it is a dense forest, in front of it is a vast green field, a bright little river flows not far away, and colorful wildflowers bloom beneath the nest….

Which bird built such a beautiful and comfortable nest? Why did the bird abandon this exquisite and lovely home?…..

It’s a heart-wrenching, sorrowful story:

A pair of lovebirds flew in from the distant great forest. Their heads and chests shimmered with golden light, green feathers on their backs, their bodies nimble and agile. After a tough journey, they settled here, preparing to raise their young and, once the chicks were grown, fly back to the forest together.

Their melodious singing captivated the other birds. They devoted all their effort, searching day and night for twigs and vines to build the nest. They soaked and softened the branches in river water, then wove them together with their beaks and claws on a chosen tree fork. After enduring countless hardships, they finally built a magical aerial nest, creating the most beautiful and comfortable home with love.

In the blossoming summer, the happy bird couple hatched their chicks in the new nest. The chicks had red, pointed little beaks, thin, curved claws, soft downy feathers, and tails like scissors, chirping at the parent birds, begging for food when hungry.

Birds daddy and mommy watched their pair of chicks grow day by day, beginning to sprout beautiful feathers, filled with joy as they foraged for food, hoping to feed their children every day. The magpies sang songs of blessing to the nest:

“This is such a warm and lovely bird home.”

The sun shone, leaves swayed, a small bird stood on the top of the bird’s nest, singing towards the blue sky and white clouds. Did it long to fly? But its wings hadn’t grown yet.

Another little bird poked its head out from the nest, curiously gazing at the distant fields, green trees, wildflowers, and flowing river—what a wonderful world!

Suddenly, a hard mud pellet shot sharply at the little bird stretching its neck out at the nest entrance, silencing it instantly. The small bird standing on top of the nest, startled, leapt up instinctively, but not yet knowing how to fly, it fell to the ground!

It was a child’s prank.

He had gotten a slingshot and made some clay pellets, eager to test his shooting accuracy. The pellets hit many leaves and flowers, and then he aimed at the high bird’s nest…..

Did this naughty child think about the little bird losing its life? Did he know the bird’s parents would be heartbroken and inconsolable? ….

The two lovely chicks, one lay stiff in the nest, the other lay on the ground below the tree, no longer chirping.

Birds daddy and mommy returned, perching in front of the bird’s nest, staying there without changing position or posture for a whole day and night, silently watching their nest like two sculptures. When the sun rose and bathed the ground in sunlight, the parent birds resolutely flew away from the nest, never to return.

Since then, this warm bird’s nest became empty, no bird ever lived there again.

The beautiful aerial house, the wind didn’t have the heart to blow it down, the snow didn’t have the heart to crush it, the sunlight shone on it, the wind caressed it, the rain washed it. The nest’s branches and vines sprouted new buds, stretched out thin branches, firmly entwining with the tree. Flowering branches grew roots, stems, and leaves, blooming bright little flowers, turning the bird’s nest into a hanging flower basket, showcasing the miracle of life, becoming a rare wonder of the world.

Would the child with the slingshot regret his mistake in front of the flower basket?

But the tree would never forget that tragic story.
