Witch Story: The Sowing Witch
The Sowing Witch had many magical seeds.
With a simple flick of her hand, she could plant clouds in the sky, fill trees with birds…
One day, Little Bear was on his way home when a gray shadow darted past him—it was the bad-hearted Gray Wolf.
Little Bear quietly followed Gray Wolf and discovered that he was up to no good again—Gray Wolf had stolen Rabbit’s entire bag of corn.
Little Bear thought, “If I ask the Sowing Witch for some kindness seeds and plant them in Gray Wolf’s heart, wouldn’t that solve the problem?” So he went to find the Sowing Witch.
“Kindness seeds?” the Sowing Witch asked, “To plant in Gray Wolf’s heart?”
“Yes,” Little Bear said earnestly, “That way, Gray Wolf won’t do bad things anymore. You don’t have these kinds of seeds, do you?”
“The Sowing Witch lacks seeds? Ridiculous!” the Sowing Witch snorted, “I’m saying, these kindness seeds are very precious…”
“Name your terms,” Little Bear interrupted.
The Sowing Witch’s expression softened, “Within one week, help Gray Wolf find seven friends, and I’ll give you the kindness seeds.”
“Seven friends?” Little Bear thought this was very difficult, as it was hard enough for Gray Wolf to make even one friend.
“Exactly,” the Sowing Witch said as she walked away, “My seeds are that precious…”
With no other choice, Little Bear braced himself to give it a try.
“Gray Wolf,” Little Bear went to Gray Wolf’s house and sincerely said, “I want to be your friend.”
“Are you out of your mind?” Gray Wolf glared at him and asked, “Come on, tell me what you want me to do. You must want me to help you against someone, right?”
“I don’t want you to do anything for me,” Little Bear said, “I just want to be your good friend, a friend who can share everything.”
“Share?” Gray Wolf asked, puzzled, “I can share all your things?”
“Yes!” Little Bear confirmed.
“Alright then.” Gray Wolf followed Little Bear home, opened Little Bear’s fridge, and started eating. He thought Little Bear would surely be distressed. But Little Bear let him eat.
“Why do you want to be friends with me?” Gray Wolf couldn’t help but ask, “I have such a bad reputation.”
“I just want… to plant some kindness in your heart,” Little Bear said honestly.
“Kindness?” Gray Wolf was surprised, “There are such seeds?”
“Of course, the Sowing Witch has all kinds of seeds,” Little Bear said loudly, “You just need to make seven friends.”
“Little Bear, you’re so kind,” Gray Wolf’s hand tightly gripped Little Bear’s. He genuinely considered Little Bear his good friend now.
“Come on, let’s go to my house,” Gray Wolf said, pulling Little Bear along, intending to share the stolen corn with him.
“That won’t do,” Little Bear said, “This corn belongs to Rabbit, we should return it to her.”
“Return?” Gray Wolf had never done such a thing, “No way, Rabbit will scold me to death.”
“Aren’t we friends?” Little Bear said sternly, “Between friends, whoever is right should be listened to.”
With no choice, Gray Wolf followed Little Bear to return the corn. Rabbit, who was upset about the missing corn, jumped with joy when she saw it return.
“Gray Wolf knows he was wrong…” Little Bear pointed to the head-bowed Gray Wolf, “He’s afraid you won’t forgive him.”
“Gray Wolf, if you don’t steal anymore, I’ll forgive you,” Rabbit said.
“Alright, alright,” Gray Wolf nodded quickly, “I won’t steal again!”
Back at Gray Wolf’s house, Little Bear convinced him to write a letter of friendship to Rabbit.
The next morning, Rabbit’s reply arrived: “Gray Wolf, I’m a bit worried about being friends with you, but I’m willing to give it a try!”
After that, convincing Little Hedgehog, Little Gray Mouse… took a lot of effort from Little Bear. Gray Wolf cooperated very well, feeling that with each new friend, his once empty heart felt a bit fuller and happier.
“Gray Wolf,” Little Bear cheered a week later, “You have seven friends now, you can go exchange for the seeds!”
“No need,” Gray Wolf said, “My heart is full, there’s no room for seeds…”
“Ah!” Little Bear looked at Gray Wolf, whose eyes sparkled with gentleness, “Hmm, you’ve already become a kind Gray Wolf…”
After hearing Little Bear’s explanation, the Sowing Witch laughed heartily, “I expected this outcome.”
“So, do you actually have kindness seeds?” Little Bear asked.
“Yes…” the Sowing Witch said mysteriously, “Would the Sowing Witch ever lack seeds? Ridiculous! But, those seeds are very precious…”
