Selfless Love Story

If a man humbles himself before you, it’s because he truly loves you.

They met on campus, at the same school but in different departments. With him, she felt a natural sense of superiority—her family lived in the city, and she was the only child, used to being taken care of. She enjoyed being pampered by him and often lost her temper for no reason. Every time, regardless of who was at fault, he would be the one to apologize in the end.

After graduation, she became a designer at an advertising company, earning a decent income. He got a job as an ordinary salesman at a company, where he was very busy and didn’t earn much.

He came from a rural family, where his parents relied on farming to make a living, making it a challenge to support a college student. They rented a place together, and most of the furnishings were bought by her, giving her even more confidence in front of him.

Having never done housework before and refusing to learn, she didn’t cook, so he became the chef at home. She disliked washing dishes and laundry because detergents were bad for her skin, so he took on all the chores.

Every day, he worked up a sweat in the kitchen while she cuddled a teddy bear on the couch, eating snacks and watching TV. In her eyes, if a man couldn’t support the family financially, doing more housework was only fair. He never complained and always made sure she was comfortable.

She liked to win in everything, and since her salary was higher than his, she felt proud. In front of him and his friends, she often mentioned this, basking in her glory. Because of this, she felt justified in bossing him around. To her, a man who earned less than a woman didn’t deserve to be considered a man.

Sometimes, seeing him timid around her, she even looked down on him a bit, thinking that a man who obeyed a woman wouldn’t achieve much. When she thought about this, a strange sense of disappointment arose within her.

Her company had no shortage of excellent men who occasionally flirted with her or openly showed interest. Comparing these suave men with her humble, even somewhat pathetic, boyfriend, her frustration grew. She often wondered if her love was a mistake.

In July, he told her that the provincial TV station had a show called “Wealth Forum” and invited him and two other industry colleagues to participate. She didn’t want him to go, fearing he would embarrass himself in front of relatives and friends, but didn’t know how to stop him. Seeing his eagerness, she reluctantly agreed but repeatedly urged him to listen more and speak less.

She didn’t understand why the TV station invited him, as she never cared about his work. To her, a mediocre man with a mediocre salary should blend into the crowd, not have a chance to be on TV.

The program was broadcast live. Watching him on TV, she was nervous, fearing he would say something inappropriate and make a fool of himself.

However, he was like a different person, speaking confidently and calmly, much like seasoned business leaders. He became the focus of everyone’s attention, answering tricky questions with ease and humor, eliciting laughter from the audience. Seeing the slightly admiring look from the beautiful female host, she felt a twinge of jealousy for the first time in their seven-year relationship.

After the show, she sent him a text message, telling him she loved him for the first time.

Lying in bed, she couldn’t calm down. She suddenly remembered that the host introduced him as the company’s vice president. How could a vice president only earn 4,000 yuan a month? Did he have a secret, sending money to his parents in the countryside or having an affair? After all, they were just living together, not married.

Unable to sleep, she got up and searched every corner of the house. In a book on the bookshelf, she found a bankbook. When she opened it, her eyes filled with tears. It was under her name, and since the second year they met, he had been saving money each month, sometimes several times her salary.

When he came home, she asked him, and he confessed: he wanted to save enough for a down payment on a house to marry her.

In the days that followed, he continued to treat her with the same devotion, but she could no longer accept it with a clear conscience. She learned to say thank you, to give her love while receiving his. On her blog, she wrote: “Another name for love is humility. Women in love will eventually understand that if a man humbles himself before you, it’s because he truly loves you.”
