Classic Love Stories: I’m Here to Take You

July, with a touch of melancholy, and graduation season arrives as expected.

The revelry between toasts and cheers seems light and fleeting amid the farewells.

The banquet of youth is destined to end.

On this day, the sky was gloomy, oppressive, making it hard to breathe.

“I’m sorry.” The girl turned around and softly said these three words, making the boy’s heart bitter.

The boy didn’t speak. He couldn’t believe it, “Let’s break up.” “I’m sorry.” She said it so decisively and earnestly.

He had imagined the days ahead many times, but never thought it would end like this, as if he was abruptly pulled from a beautiful illusion into harsh reality, leaving him completely unprepared.

The boy tightly held the offer letter in his hand.

He had found a good job, and the job location was the girl’s hometown, which was supposed to be a good thing.

The girl had said that she would return to her hometown to work after graduation. Now the boy had found this job, so they wouldn’t have to be apart like most people, suffering the pains of long-distance love.

He was very happy to get this job and wanted to share this joy with the girl, but the girl didn’t give him a chance to speak.

“Why?” The boy’s heart echoed with a desperate cry.

The girl took two steps, seemed to remember something, stopped but didn’t turn around, and said in a low voice, “You’ll find someone better.” Then she walked straight to a nearby convertible Porsche. A man in the car was looking over with interest.

The boy smiled bitterly and said, “Is it him?”

The girl’s body visibly stiffened but did not stop.

The once vowed eternal love seemed so powerless in the face of harsh reality.

A gentle breeze blew, easily taking away her suffocating love.

The boy didn’t speak again, tightly clenching his fists, his nails digging into his flesh without feeling the pain. He watched the girl’s back, uncontrollably mocking the pain in his heart.

After the Porsche sped away, finally, it began to rain.

The cool drops hit his face, chilling his heart.

The boy looked up, letting the rain wash over his pale face, realizing that in this realistic society, no matter how deep the love, it couldn’t withstand a thin check.

The rain poured down.

A figure seemingly soulless, walked alone through the streets of the city, a bit lost, not knowing where to go.

“Beep beep beep” an urgent honking sound.

The boy turned his head mechanically, and a truck was right in front of him…

Three days later.

In the hospital. The girl lay on the bed, tilting her head to look at the man beside her. She forced a smile on her pale face and said, “Dr. Zhang, I haven’t thanked you yet for helping me act out that scene last time.”

“Maybe you’re right, let him hate you, he will only hurt for a while, he will quickly forget you as a gold digger, but if you let him love you, he will hurt for a lifetime…”

Dr. Zhang mumbled, feeling inexplicably heavy.

“I don’t want him to be sad for me.” The girl smiled faintly, as if relieved, her face even regained some color. She struggled to sit up.

The nurse and Dr. Zhang hurried to help her sit up. But their expressions were not good because they both knew the girl was experiencing a final burst of energy before passing; she was about to leave.

The girl sat up, looking out the window, where the walls were covered with climbing ivy, lush green like the wall behind the campus, also covered with ivy.

As she gazed, she seemed to recall the happiest moments of her life, her face full of warmth. She murmured, “You were so silly then, couldn’t even climb such a low wall. Hehe, you said you would catch me on the other side of the wall…”

“But I can’t get over this wall,” tears flowed from the corners of the girl’s eyes down her cheeks.

“It doesn’t matter if you can’t climb over, I’m here! I’m here to catch you, aren’t I?”

The familiar voice made the girl’s whole body tremble. She turned in surprise towards the voice, seeing the boy standing at the door, smiling at her as always, “I’m here to take you.”

The nurse saw the girl staring straight at the door and couldn’t help but look too, but there was nothing there. She was about to ask the girl if she needed anything, but when she turned around, she saw Dr. Zhang silently shaking his head.

The girl saw the boy extending his hand to her, and she smiled even more beautifully, instinctively reaching out to grasp his hand.

“Beep”

The girl’s heart rate flatlined, her mouth still holding that happy curve.

“Dr. Zhang, the patient in Room 202 is too badly injured, she didn’t make it.” Another nurse rushed in and said.

Dr. Zhang seemed not to hear, he looked out the window where two butterflies were dancing together, flying over the ivy. He took a deep breath and softly said, “Two poor souls, I wish you happiness…”
