fairy story: The Wish of the Cotton Fairy

There was a kind and lovely Cotton Fairy who came down to the mortal world to play.

She loved children very much, so she transformed herself into a little girl and played chase and frolicked with them. They all ran freely and happily every day. However, not all the children were happy. There was a little boy whose parents worked far away, in a place so distant that even the Cotton Fairy would exhaust a lot of her energy to fly there. She felt deep sympathy for the little boy.

The Cotton Fairy played with the little boy, trying to cheer him up. But the boy was always gloomy. He missed his mother. He said his greatest wish was to meet his mother in his dreams, but he had never dreamed of her, which made him so anxious he was about to cry.

The Cotton Fairy suddenly understood. The boy just wanted to dream of his mother! This was an easy task for her because she had magical powers. She could help the boy achieve his dream. However, this required the Cotton Fairy to give up some of the cotton from her body to make a soft and comfortable pillow for the boy. By resting his head on this pillow, the boy would be able to dream of his mother. Without hesitation, the Cotton Fairy plucked some cotton from her body and, with a breath of fairy magic, made a pillow for the boy.

That night, the little boy lay on the cotton pillow and really did dream of his mother. In the dream, his mother gently held him in her arms, kissed his eyes and forehead, and sang his favorite lullaby. The next day, the boy was overjoyed and ran to find the Cotton Fairy. He told her, “I dreamed of my mother! She hasn’t forgotten me; she still loves me so much!” The Cotton Fairy happily danced with the boy.

A few children heard about the “cotton pillow” story. Like the little boy, they also wanted a pillow that could let them dream of their mothers, as their parents were working far away, too. These children lived with their elderly grandparents and not only had to endure the pain of their parents’ absence but also had to take care of their grandparents like little adults.

The Cotton Fairy felt very sad for them.

The Cotton Fairy disappeared. For a small fairy with limited power, making one cotton pillow was no problem, but making many would completely drain her. The Cotton Fairy was gone for a whole day, and the children waited anxiously.

The next day, the Cotton Fairy returned. She came back with a smile and brought new “cotton pillows” for the children. Seeing the grateful smiles on the children’s faces, the Cotton Fairy was also filled with joy.

That night, all the children dreamed of their loving parents. Each one smiled sweetly in their dreams, relishing their mothers’ affectionate caresses. However, after that night, no one ever saw the Cotton Fairy again.

The Cotton Fairy had drained all the cotton from her body, leaving only a wisp of cotton lighter than air. She floated up to the sky. Although the Father of the Fairies initially intended to punish her for using her magic without permission, he was deeply moved upon learning of her selfless acts. He allowed the Cotton Fairy to return to the Fairy Palace, where each fairy contributed some cotton to restore her form. The Father of the Fairies also granted her even more powerful rainbow-colored cotton, so she could help more children and create colorful dreams for them.
