Romantic short fiction: A Great Love
The boy and girl were a couple. The girl loved experiencing the rain, and the boy always held an umbrella for her when it rained. Most of the umbrella covered the girl, and the boy often got soaked. He never said anything, just silently watched the girl’s enraptured face. He felt very happy, and so did the girl.
One day, the boy and girl went out to have fun. The boy held the girl’s hand as they passed by a construction site. The girl was excitedly jumping and saying something. The boy rarely spoke, just quietly watched her happiness, feeling happy himself.
Suddenly, a small piece of debris fell from the building above, heading straight for the girl’s head. There was no time to react. The boy quickly pulled the girl into his arms. The girl screamed. He wanted to use his body to shield her from the falling debris. Just before it hit the ground, the boy flipped his body so he faced down.
As a result, only the girl’s hand was hit by the debris, resulting in a fracture.
The girl, only then realizing what had happened, cried out in pain. Tears started to fall as she thought, “The old saying, ‘Husband and wife are like birds in the same forest; they fly separately when disaster strikes,’ is indeed true.” She endured the pain, got up from the boy’s body, and ran away without even looking back at him.
The boy, meanwhile, called out the girl’s name with a trembling voice, his lips already turning pale. He took out his phone and dialed the girl’s number, but she didn’t answer. He called again and again, but she still didn’t answer.
After several tries, he gave up. He started typing something on his phone, but by this time, blood was slowly spreading around him. His hand fell, and the phone lay in the pool of blood, too weak to press the send button.
The next day, the girl learned that the boy was in critical condition at the hospital. She forgot her anger and rushed to the hospital. When she arrived, the doctor had already declared that the boy had died due to excessive bleeding in his lungs.
It turned out that when the boy tried to shield the girl from the falling debris, he noticed a steel rod standing about ten centimeters high on the ground. He had flipped his body to avoid it hitting the girl, using all his strength to ensure only the girl’s hand was hit by the debris while he was impaled by the steel rod in his lung.
The boy’s mother handed the boy’s phone to the girl. She saw the unsent message: “Dear, I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you better and let your hand get hurt…” Upon seeing this, the girl couldn’t hold back her tears any longer. She cried as she ran towards the boy’s eternal resting place in heaven.
