Quiet love

Under a row of green willow trees on the university campus, a boy and a girl were walking. The boy was named Yang Qing, a calm and unassuming character. The girl was Mei Zi, quiet and reserved, speaking little. They had been walking in silence for a long time.

Yang Qing wanted to speak several times but stopped himself. He had liked Mei Zi for a long time; ever since the first day of school when he saw her, her innocent face was etched in his mind. He always thought Mei Zi should understand his feelings. Therefore, he felt no need to confess; after all, they had similar interests and mutual understanding, so why bother with words?

Mei Zi had feelings too, but she was unsure. She kept wondering in her heart, “Does he love me? But why doesn’t he confess? If he doesn’t like me, then what is that lingering affection in his eyes?”

Yang Qing never said anything, and Mei Zi would never ask. This went on, and three years of university life were about to end. Yang Qing still hadn’t expressed anything. Mei Zi, feeling disheartened, thought perhaps she had misunderstood.

Maybe Yang Qing didn’t like her at all and just saw her as a good friend. With this thought, Mei Zi’s heart turned cold, and she started to avoid Yang Qing, hoping to escape the faint pain in her heart.

Yang Qing didn’t know why Mei Zi suddenly ignored him. He was confused and scared, especially when he saw Mei Zi walking with another boy; his heart felt as if it were being torn apart. Finally, he couldn’t bear it anymore. One day, when Mei Zi was walking out of the classroom with a boy, he followed and called out loudly from behind, “Mei Zi…”

But at that moment, he lost his courage and asked in a barely audible voice, “Mei Zi, could you help me copy some notes? I need them soon.”

Mei Zi felt a bit disappointed and replied blandly, “Not today, I’m going out.”

Yang Qing panicked, scratching his head, blocking the corridor, wanting to say something but unable to, his face turning red.

The boy with Mei Zi pulled her arm and said, “Mei Zi, let’s go.”

Mei Zi nodded, and Yang Qing reluctantly stepped aside. Just as Mei Zi passed by him, Yang Qing’s mind went blank, and he shouted uncontrollably, “Mei Zi, don’t go!”

Mei Zi paused for a moment but continued walking.

Behind her, Yang Qing, in a voice as soft as a mosquito, said, “I love you…”

Mei Zi’s body trembled. She turned around to see Yang Qing’s face flushed. She asked, “What did you just say?”

Yang Qing, standing there nervously, hands tightly clenched, raised his voice slightly, “Mei Zi, I love you…”

Mei Zi didn’t know how long she had been waiting for these words. She felt a sudden rush of emotion, and tears began to fall uncontrollably from her eyes…
