magical spider Story
In a forest, there lived a hundred-year-old spider. The hundred-year-old spider had a hundred beds, each bed bigger than the last.
The old spider used one bed each year, and had to have a long dream on that bed. After waking up from the dream, the old spider would cheerfully say, “Aha, it’s time to change to a new bed.”
Having a hundred beds and dreaming a hundred dreams on them would allow the old spider to become a spirit. All spiders gradually become spirits this way.
On the hundredth bed, the old spider had already dreamed ninety-nine dreams and had just started dreaming the hundredth one. It thought, how wonderful it would be to wake up as a spirit.
The old spider had just fallen into its dream, dreaming it was walking towards a magnificent palace. Suddenly, it was awakened by noise.
A little squirrel was jumping around on a tree, happily dancing a squirrel dance. It jumped faster and further, and eventually jumped to the area where the old spider’s hundred beds were.
Huh, what’s that? The little squirrel discovered the smallest bed of the old spider. The little squirrel got distracted and accidentally fell from the tree.
What a coincidence, it bounced up. It landed on the smallest bed of the old spider.
It was a delicate and beautiful bed. The little squirrel was amazed. It thought, whose bed is this? Whoever slept in this bed must have been very happy and fortunate.
Whose bed is this? Whose bed is this?
The little squirrel kept walking and calling out.
It found one bed, then another. Each bed was bigger than the last. Oh, the baby got bigger each year and needed a new bed. The little squirrel thought, these beds are like a baby’s photo album, full of memories.
The little squirrel kept calling out and counting.
Whose bed is this? Whose bed is this? One, two, three, four, five, six…
When it counted to the hundredth bed, it saw a giant creature on it. Wow, it was as thick as the root of a big tree, with many long root-like legs, looking very scary.
“Hey, is this your bed?” asked the little squirrel.
At first, it asked softly, then it started shouting. At this moment, the old spider was dreaming of its journey to the magnificent palace. Suddenly, it slipped.
The old spider was very angry and woke up. Upon waking, it heard the little squirrel shouting, “Is this your bed?”
The old spider roared like thunder, “Little thing, who do you think this bed belongs to!”
The little squirrel cautiously pointed at the other beds and asked, “Are those beds yours too?”
The old spider said, “Speak up, what do you want?”
The little squirrel said, “Can I bring my friends to play on those beds?”
The old spider impatiently said, “Fine, just don’t wake me up, or I’ll be very, very, very angry.”
The little squirrel happily thanked it and left. It first told this good news to the little rabbit, its best friend.
The little rabbit then told the little dog, its good friend. The news spread, and many, many friends of friends came.
The little squirrel was the first to discover the old spider’s beds, so everyone listened to its instructions. The little squirrel said, “We can dance or sleep on the beds, but we can’t make noise or sing. The old spider is sleeping, and if we wake it up, we’ll be in big trouble. It has a strange temper.”
Everyone was very happy to have a bed. But if you closed your eyes and listened, it seemed like there was no one there because everyone remembered the little squirrel’s words and tried not to make any noise.
Then, an elephant arrived. The elephant wobbled and jumped onto the ninety-ninth bed. Wow, it was so much fun! The elephant was very excited, shaking its trunk, wagging its tail, and making faces. The elephant felt that wasn’t enough, so it started dancing an elephant dance on the bed.
The elephant’s feet stomped on the bed, “thump, thump, thump,” like beating a drum. “Hey, quieter, hey, quieter,” the other friends reminded it. The elephant was even happier, thinking its friends were admiring it, so it stomped even harder. Everyone found its silly look very amusing.
At first, they were worried the elephant would wake up the old spider, but then they saw the old spider was still asleep, and the elephant was so funny, so they started dancing and singing too.
The old spider dreamed it had entered the palace’s gate but somehow tripped on the threshold. It woke up. “Thump, thump, thump,” so much noise. The old spider was about to get angry but heard the elephant’s singing. It thought, who has such a terrible voice, and so loud? The old spider opened its eyes and saw the elephant.
The old spider laughed loudly, and everyone stopped dancing and singing. They heard the old spider’s laughter. The old spider’s laugh was like thunder.
The elephant didn’t care and kept dancing and singing happily. “So fun, so fun, kids, let’s dance and sing together,” the old spider shouted. It started bouncing on the bed. Seeing the old spider not only wasn’t angry but also joined them, the other friends went wild with joy.
The old spider always thought becoming a spirit was the most interesting thing because it hadn’t encountered anything more interesting. After having ninety-nine dreams, it suddenly felt that becoming a spirit was the least interesting thing. The old spider didn’t become a spirit, but it said, I found joy and happiness.
Especially that silly, big-nosed elephant, it was so amusing! The old spider said, come on, friends, I have a hundred dancing beds, free of charge. Its advertisement was written on every leaf in the forest.
