Happy Ending Love Story
He and she met at a party. She was young and beautiful, surrounded by many admirers, while he was just an ordinary guy.
So, at the end of the party, when he invited her for a coffee, she was surprised. However, out of politeness, she agreed.
Sitting in the café, the atmosphere between them was awkward, with little to talk about. She just wanted to leave as soon as possible. But then, when the waitress brought their coffee, he suddenly said, “Please bring some salt. I’m used to having salt in my coffee.”
At that moment, she was stunned, the waitress was stunned, and all eyes were on him, making his face turn red.
The waitress brought the salt, and he put some in his coffee, drinking it slowly. She was a very curious woman, so she asked, “Why do you put salt in your coffee?”
He was silent for a while and then slowly, almost word by word, said, “When I was young, my home was by the sea. I spent a lot of time in the sea, and the seawater would come in, filling my mouth with its bitter and salty taste.
Now, it’s been a long time since I’ve been home. Adding salt to my coffee is a way to remember home.”
She was suddenly moved because it was the first time she heard a man express his homesickness in front of her. A man who misses home must be a family-oriented man, and a family-oriented man must be a loving man. She suddenly had the desire to share, listening to him talk about his distant hometown. The atmosphere gradually became harmonious, and they talked for a long time. She didn’t refuse when he offered to take her home.
After that, they frequently went on dates. She discovered that he was a very good man—generous, attentive, and caring, possessing all the qualities she admired in an excellent man.
She was secretly glad that she had been polite enough not to miss out on him. She took him to every café in the city, and every time she would say, “Please bring some salt. My friend likes salt in his coffee.”
Eventually, just like in fairy tales, “the prince and the princess got married and lived happily ever after.” They were indeed very happy and lived that way for over forty years until he fell ill and passed away recently.
The story seemed to end there, if not for the letter.
The letter was written by him before he died, addressed to her: “Forgive me for deceiving you all these years. Do you remember the first time I asked you out for coffee?
The atmosphere was terrible, and I was very uncomfortable and nervous. For some reason, I asked the waitress for salt, though I don’t actually take salt in my coffee. Since I had said it, I had to go through with it. I didn’t expect it to pique your curiosity, and so I drank salted coffee for half a lifetime.
Many times, I wanted to tell you the truth, but I was afraid you’d be angry or even leave me. Now, I’m not afraid anymore. The dead are easily forgiven, right? Meeting you has been the greatest happiness of my life. If there’s a next life, I hope to marry you again, but I don’t want to drink salted coffee anymore. You don’t know how awful it tastes!”
The letter shocked her and made her feel deceived. However, he didn’t know how much she wanted to tell him: she was so happy that someone was willing to make such a lifelong pretense for her.
