“Please, let me stay in your flower for a little while!” the little caterpillar pleaded once again with the pink flower. He liked that flower so much and longed to crawl into its fragrant petals and lie there for a while.

But the flower refused. She replied gruffly, “I’ve told you many times, only beautiful butterflies can come in. Why don’t you hurry up and make a cocoon?”

“I—I’m scared!” the little caterpillar said pitifully. “Well, that’s too bad then!” The flower closed her eyes and ignored the little caterpillar.

At that moment, the little caterpillar felt very conflicted. He was afraid of being trapped in the dark cocoon; he worried the cocoon might be blown to the ground by the wind and then washed into the river by the rain; he was scared that it would hurt when wings sprouted from his back; but he was more afraid of the flower being angry and ignoring him.

“The flower is just too beautiful, too fragrant! No matter what, I can’t lose her.” Finally, the little caterpillar made up his mind—to make a cocoon immediately.

Trembling all over, the little caterpillar opened his mouth and took a deep breath. A long thread immediately came out of his mouth. Then, an even longer one. Soon, his body was tightly wrapped in silk.

The little caterpillar lay in the cocoon, feeling breathless and numb all over, as if needles were pricking him. But luckily, it wasn’t long before his wings grew out. The little caterpillar had turned into a butterfly. He bit through the cocoon, spread his wings, and flew out.

Oh, my! He quickly realized that flying was such a wonderful feeling, and there was something even better: not only did he see that flower, but he also saw thousands of equally beautiful and fragrant flowers.

The flower saw him too and said in a very pleasant voice, “Come, come into my flower! I’ve saved a bit of nectar for you!”

Happily, he flew towards the flower. Smelling the fragrance and sipping the nectar, he thought: Luckily, I had the courage to make a cocoon. It feels so good to be a butterfly! Tomorrow, I’ll visit other flowers too!
