One day, a little lizard was playing in and out of the cracks in the rocks when suddenly, something hit him hard. The little lizard was knocked out immediately.
After a while, the little lizard woke up, opened his eyes, and looked around. He found a large tree branch next to him. He was about to go home when he suddenly felt that something was missing. He turned around and saw that his tail had been broken off by the tree branch and was nowhere to be found. Enduring the pain, he searched everywhere nearby but couldn’t find his lost tail.
The little lizard thought, without a tail, I will become the laughing stock of other animals. No, even if I have to search the whole forest, I must find my lost tail.
The little lizard walked for a while and heard a rustling sound above his head. He looked up and saw a squirrel jumping from branch to branch. The little lizard quickly asked, “Miss Squirrel, my tail was knocked off by a tree branch just now. Did you see it?”
The squirrel, who was having fun, stopped when she heard the little lizard asking about his tail and said, “You are so careless. How could you lose something as important as a tail? Take us squirrels, for example. Our tails are tools for stabilizing our bodies when we jump. When our bodies are about to fall to the right, we just swing our tails to the left; when about to fall to the left, we swing our tails to the right, and we won’t fall.” With that, the squirrel proudly demonstrated in the forest. “Moreover, when it’s cold, we use our tails to wrap around our bodies. Our tails become warm fur coats for us.” The squirrel added.
The little lizard didn’t find out where his tail was and continued to walk forward.
On a cliff, a monkey was resting, hanging from a tree branch with his tail. Seeing this, the little lizard missed his tail even more and shouted, “Brother Monkey, have you seen my tail?”
The monkey turned over and stood on the tree branch, saying, “I’ve been playing here the whole time and haven’t seen your tail.”
At the foot of the mountain, the little lizard saw Uncle Cow eating grass.
“Uncle Cow, have you seen my tail?”
Uncle Cow raised his head and kindly said, “Little Lizard, I haven’t seen your tail!” Then, he regretfully said, “Little Lizard, don’t lose your tail so easily! Take me, for example, without my tail, mosquitoes, flies, and horseflies would bully me terribly.” As he spoke, a horsefly landed on Uncle Cow, greedily sucking. Uncle Cow flicked his tail with a crack, killing the horsefly. “See, I can’t manage without my tail,” Uncle Cow said.
The little lizard didn’t find his tail and walked home dejectedly. Lizard Mama asked, “Sweetie, what’s wrong?”
The little lizard, crying, told his mama about losing his tail. Lizard Mama listened, smiled slightly, and said, “Losing your tail doesn’t matter!”
“How can it not matter!” the little lizard shouted. “Squirrel, Monkey, and Uncle Cow all have such useful tails. How can I not have a tail?”
Lizard Mama explained, “Sweetie, our tails are different from other animals’. They can grow back after being broken off, which is wonderful!” Mama continued, “Look, our tails are long and big. When we are attacked by enemies, our tails break off easily, confusing the enemy so they won’t chase us. After a while, we grow a new tail.”
“Really, Mama?” the little lizard eagerly asked.
“Of course it’s true. This skill has been honed through many years of hard life. So remember, if you encounter a strong enemy, you can escape by breaking off your tail.”
The little lizard was finally happy. Before long, he had indeed grown a new tail.
