Love is Not a Tragedy
He loved her with material things, flowers, and all the romance that money could buy. At first, she didn’t accept it, not even glancing at it, saying, “Such expensive love is not something I can afford.”
He didn’t give up and drove to the suburbs every day to pick wildflowers for her, taking her to eat the cheapest snacks. He loved her in her own way. Her friends advised her to marry him, saying he was so handsome. Her parents said to marry him, as he had such good conditions. After hearing this, she was still hesitant, always feeling that something was missing between them.
The more she wanted to escape, the more he frantically wanted to win her over. Whatever she wanted, whatever she thought, he would do it for her. She had no reason to refuse him. She thought, maybe this is love, maybe this is the reason to marry him. But just before they got married, she had a car accident and her face was disfigured.
When she woke up and saw her face, she thought he wouldn’t come again and the wedding preparations would stop. But he didn’t stop; he treated her as well as ever. The wedding was postponed for a month due to her injuries, and eventually, she still married him, this time with sincerity and gratitude.
After marriage, she didn’t bring him happiness but instead brought him misfortune. His company suffered continuous losses and eventually declared bankruptcy, leaving him with nothing. He became very depressed and drank all day. She stayed silently by his side. Once, he got drunk and hit her, calling her a jinx. She touched the blood at the corner of her mouth and helped him to bed.
From then on, whenever he drank, he started to beat and curse her without restraint. Every time, she neither cried nor made a fuss, silently cleaning up the broken furniture and helping the drunk, unconscious him to bed.
Without a source of income, she worked desperately, exhausted every day, but never complained.
Ten years passed in a flash. He still hugged a bottle every day, while she now owned a small business. Although the money wasn’t as much as he used to make, it was enough to support the household.
With a busy business and many social engagements, she often came home very late. He would get angry, shouting and suspecting her of having an affair. No matter how she explained, he didn’t believe her and beat and cursed her even more harshly. She didn’t escape, letting him beat and curse her. When he was tired and his hands went numb, she handed him a bankbook, saying, “This money is enough to make up for what you lost in the bankruptcy. It’s all yours. From now on, we are even. Let’s get a divorce.” After saying that, she cried.
He took the bankbook and shouted, “Well! Now that you’re capable, you want to kick me out. I’ve always known you never loved me.” Saying this, he kicked her in the face. She fell to the ground and took a long time to get up, staggering out of the house.
Not long after, they divorced. He took her money and lived a life of debauchery.
She lived alone, and five years later, one day she received a call from the hospital saying he had been in a car accident. She hurried to the hospital. The doctor said he was paralyzed from the neck down, only able to speak.
A few days later, he woke up. The first person he saw was her. Angrily, he cursed her and told her to leave. No matter how much he cursed, she didn’t leave. Friends and relatives advised her to hire a caretaker since they were already divorced and were strangers now.
She didn’t leave and took him back to her own home for easier care. Gradually, he was moved and choked up, asking, “Don’t you hate me for how I treated you before?”
She lowered her head and said, “I did hate you, but when my face was ruined, you didn’t abandon me. Now, I can’t abandon you.”
After hearing this, tears welled up in his eyes. He murmured, “If I hadn’t blamed my failure on you, if I had had enough confidence to turn things around, our lives today might still be happy.”
She remained silent, not looking at him, carefully tucking him in. Because she thought that time never goes back. Instead of reminiscing about the past, it is better to strive to create a better tomorrow.
