Super Warm Bedtime Love Story
He was born a rough man, with brash actions and crude language.
The woman who spent half her life with this rough man was meticulous and never knew how to lose her temper. When he got furious, she would only smile, and though he was the head of the household, he always listened to her when it came to running the home.
Last autumn, she suffered a stroke.
Normally, he had a two-drink habit, but now he didn’t touch alcohol at all, saying he felt more alert without it. Every night, he would lie next to her without undressing, covering himself with a coat. He would keep his hand under her blanket, and at the slightest movement, he would get up immediately to help her, clean her, and wash her.
When she needed to use the bedpan, he would always place his hands on its edge, separating her skin from the cold surface, to keep her warm.
These complicated tasks were repeated countless times each night, and he always performed them gently and patiently. After each task, he would touch her hand with his rough, cracked one and tell her, “I understand your feelings.”
Every night, he sat by her pillow, peeling sunflower seeds for her. He would crack them open, remove the shells, and place the seeds one by one on her lips.
She would lick them into her mouth with her tongue, chewing them with relish. At these moments, there was no trace of illness on her face; she looked like a child eagerly waiting for a spoon-fed treat from her mother, her expression warm and content.
After the Spring Festival, her condition improved significantly, and soon she could walk with the help of a cane.
Spring arrived, and the mountains turned green. Gradually, the orchard on the hillside behind their home was filled with birdsong and blossoming flowers.
One morning, he walked her along the narrow path in the orchard, holding her hand with one hand and tightly supporting her waist with the other, moving forward step by step. She gazed at the lush, flower-filled trees on the hillside and signaled for him to stop.
She took out several small booklets from her pocket and showed them to him. “This orchard is ours now. Our son took care of the paperwork yesterday.”
He took them and saw that the documents indeed bore his name, along with a receipt for 150,000 yuan.
“Where did the 150,000 yuan come from?” he asked in confusion.
She scolded him, saying, “You rough man! You don’t even know how much money you’ve earned in half a lifetime. From the day I married you, I started saving. In 38 years, I’ve saved 150,000 yuan. Before I fell seriously ill, I sensed that my illness was severe and I might not be able to accompany you any longer.
If I gave you this money, you would definitely spend it on my treatment, and if I couldn’t recover, you would have nothing left. I thought this orchard would not only generate money every year but also the birds in the trees could keep you company and leave something for our children. So, I bought this orchard just before I fell ill. I didn’t expect the paperwork to take this long.”
For some reason, he cried as if all the tears of his life had come rushing out at once.
