The Little Rooster Digs for Worms

The rain had stopped, and the afternoon sun was shining brightly! The little rooster and the little hen went together to look for food.

The little rooster spotted some worms beside the flower bed and quickly ran over. Seeing him, the worms immediately burrowed into the soil. The little rooster noted where the worms went into the ground and began digging with his claws. He dug for a while but couldn’t find any worms. So, he called over to the little hen on the grassy side: “Little hen, come dig for worms. Worms taste better than little bugs.”

The little hen came over. The little rooster pointed to the dug-up soil and said, “The worms burrowed down from here.”

The little rooster and the little hen dug together, making the hole much deeper, but they still couldn’t find any worms. The little hen said, “Little rooster, Mama Hen said that once worms burrow into the soil, we can’t catch them.”

The little rooster said, “Mama Hen also said that perseverance turns an iron rod into a needle. If we keep digging, we will definitely find the worms.”

The little hen replied, “Digging for worms is different from grinding an iron rod. Worms can move and burrow elsewhere. We should go to the grassland to catch insects. There are grasshoppers, moths, and in the shallow soil layers, there are mole crickets and centipedes too!”

“No! I want to dig for worms right here,” the little rooster said, and he continued digging furiously with his claws.

The little hen had no choice but to go back to the grassland alone to catch insects.

The little rooster kept digging deeper and deeper, but he still couldn’t find any worms. He was hungry and tired, so he rested for a while and then continued digging.

A mallard duck passing by saw this and asked, “Little rooster, what are you digging for?”

The little rooster replied, “Uncle Mallard, a worm burrowed into the ground here, and I want to dig it out for a meal.”

The mallard duck laughed and said, “Little rooster, stop digging! The worm has long since burrowed elsewhere.”

“But I saw with my own eyes the worm burrow down from here. Where else could it go?” the little rooster asked.

“Little rooster, worms can burrow very deep into the soil, and you can’t dig them out with your claws,” the mallard duck said and then walked away.

The little rooster didn’t heed the mallard duck’s advice and continued digging. Until the sun set, the little rooster still hadn’t found any worms and had to go home with the little hen. He saw the little hen was full from eating, while his own stomach was growling with hunger, and he couldn’t help but feel regret.
