Blueberry Granny and the Bears

The black bear hadn’t had a good night’s sleep for many days and looked weary.

“Oh dear, I look terrible! How can I go out like this?” The black bear frowned so deeply that it seemed you could place an egg between its brows.

“No matter, I have to go out.” The black bear put on a hat and a pair of wide-rimmed sunglasses, then hurried out the door.

“Knock, knock, knock!” More than half an hour later, a polite but somewhat urgent knock sounded at the door of a small red cabin at the foot of the mountain.

With a creak, a smiling face appeared from behind the slightly ajar door. “Good morning, Black Bear! What brings you here?”

“Blueberry Granny, may I come in?” asked the black bear respectfully from outside the door.

“Of course!” The black bear was invited inside.

“Can I tell you a story?” The black bear couldn’t wait to ask as soon as he entered.

“Sure, I love stories,” Blueberry Granny said happily.

The black bear began his story—

High up on the mountain lived a big bear who was passionate about making honey. All the bears loved his honey. But one day, the big bear found that no bears were interested in his honey anymore.

Later, a little bear passing by his honey shop told the big bear that a Blueberry Granny had come to the mountain, and her blueberry honey was delicious.

After the little bear left, the big bear felt troubled. It seemed he wasn’t the only one good at making honey. That night, the big bear couldn’t sleep. Was the blueberry honey really better than his? He tossed and turned, unable to sleep, and eventually got up.

The big bear went down the mountain, using his keen sense of smell to find a small cabin. The cabin wasn’t big, but inside were many small wooden barrels. Even through the barrels, he could smell a unique fragrance. Without guessing, he knew it was the smell of blueberry honey.

What? It smells good, but it might not taste good! The big bear thought as he dipped a finger into the honey and tasted it. Instantly, his eyes widened! What kind of honey was this? It was too delicious! He couldn’t help but marvel inwardly.

After tasting the blueberry honey, the big bear had to admit it tasted better than his own honey. He didn’t even want to taste his own honey anymore.

“What’s wrong with me?” The big bear was furious, hitting his head with his paw.

No, after making honey for so many years, he couldn’t just let his honey shop close!

A few nights later, in the dark night with the wind howling, a tall, large shadow moved back and forth by the creek at the foot of the mountain, occasionally making a “splash, splash, splash” sound of pouring something. The sound continued until dawn.

The next day, the big bear’s honey shop opened early. However, things didn’t go as he expected. The whole day passed, and a few bears came by, but they left after saying, “Blueberry Granny’s blueberry honey is so delicious, and it’s free. It’s a pity we can’t get any.”

For some reason, the big bear’s heart felt like it was being stung, burning painfully. In the days that followed, his heart felt heavy, so heavy that he couldn’t sleep…

When the black bear finished his story, he stood up, trembling as he gently removed the wide-rimmed sunglasses from his eyes, revealing his haggard appearance to Blueberry Granny.

Blueberry Granny took one look, and with a big smile, she said, “Haha, it’s been so long since I heard such a good story! Thank you for telling me, Black Bear.”

The black bear was stunned for a moment, then stammered, “Blueberry Granny, don’t you have anything else to say?”

“Of course. You mean you’re thirsty and hungry after telling such a long story, right?”

“I… I mean…” The black bear was anxious, his lips moving but unable to speak. The once strong black bear began to cry in front of Blueberry Granny.

A few days later, Blueberry Granny’s many wooden barrels were filled with fresh, thick honey brought down from the mountain, and she made delicious blueberry honey again. The bears came back, tasting the blueberry honey, declaring themselves the happiest bears in the world.

After telling Blueberry Granny his story, the black bear decided to stop making honey and instead collected interesting stories happening around him, turning them into wonderful tales.

Not only did Blueberry Granny love the black bear’s stories, but the other bears also loved them. Every day, in the small red cabin at the foot of the mountain, after tasting blueberry honey, the bears would gather around Blueberry Granny, resting their chins on their paws, and listen intently to the black bear’s fascinating stories…
