The Broken Vase

He and she were college classmates. He came from a remote rural area, and she came from a bustling city. His father was a farmer, and her father was a manager. Despite these differences, everyone said they were a match made in heaven. Despite her family’s strong opposition, they eventually got together.

He was a candidate assigned to a specific job, which meant he had to return to his predetermined unit upon graduation. She gave up the position her father had arranged for her and followed him back to his county town. He worked as a junior clerk in an office, while she taught at a middle school, leading a tough yet peaceful life. In today’s materialistic world, such love is no less than a “classic” Hollywood story.

One very cold day, she was at school, giving extra lessons to students who had missed classes, despite having a severe cold. She had called him, asking him to come home early and cook dinner. But when she came home, tired and hungry, he was not there.

The house was cold and lifeless, with no sign of warmth. Just as she was about to get up and cook dinner, he returned. She asked him where he had been. He said that since she couldn’t come back to cook, he went out to eat. She was heartbroken, with tears welling up in her eyes, and she walked into the bedroom. As she passed the coffee table, the hem of her skirt brushed against the vase on it, causing it to fall to the ground and shatter. Six months later, she left the county town and returned to the bustling city.

This is marriage, both strong and fragile. Like a beautiful vase, placed in the right spot, it can withstand the wear and tear of time. But if it’s lightly touched and falls to the ground, it can shatter into countless pieces.
