A Brief Love Story: Misguided Love

“I love you. What does it have to do with you? No matter how many faults there are, they can’t be blamed on you.” Female writer Eileen Chang once said this.

Her love was filled with a mysterious sadness.

She fell in love with someone she could neither stay with nor truly understand.

Loneliness and monotony were the basic tones of Eileen Chang’s life, but her intellect and insight were her main criteria for judging people and things.

Middle-aged man Hu Lancheng was intelligent, experienced, and had sophisticated opinions and conversations. What made him most attractive was his understanding and sympathy for women. Hu could be humble and amusing, and he genuinely appreciated and admired her novels.

Thus, despite his wife, Eileen Chang didn’t mind. He had many other women and occasionally frequented brothels, yet she wasn’t jealous. He even believed that she “wished all women in the world liked me.”

Hu Lancheng loved her talent but didn’t care about her as a person—she wasn’t beautiful and wasn’t coquettish enough. Once they got together, Hu began to act, while Eileen Chang bet everything on him.

In her writing, Eileen Chang portrayed earth-shattering, kingdom-toppling love, but in reality, she fell in love with and married a man who didn’t care about her feelings. This was undoubtedly life’s way of playing a joke on her.

So she wrote: “In the vast wilderness of time, within millions of people, you meet the person you are meant to meet. Not a moment too early or too late, you just happen to come across them. There is nothing else to say but a gentle ‘Oh, you are here too?'”

She also wrote: “I want you to know that in this world, there is always someone waiting for you. No matter when, no matter where, you know there is always such a person.”

This is a confession of love, but she chose the wrong person.

When it comes to love, women are more sincere and devoted than men. To avoid getting hurt, women often choose someone who loves them, even if they don’t have feelings for that person. But Eileen Chang was different.
