Xiaomin was a single woman.

She was used to wandering around the city alone, going from a regular employee to a white-collar worker. When feeling lonely, she would drive off on a solo trip. Unlike most women, she didn’t cake on thick layers of makeup to attract men. She didn’t believe in love in this world.

Until a manager joined the company, Zhang Guoqiang. Just as his name suggested, he was impressive. A boy who moved from the countryside to the city to work, he got into Tsinghua University and even completed his PhD. His future was bright.

Xiaomin was immediately drawn to this tall, handsome young man. Perhaps he was the prince charming of her dreams.

During a company party, fate seemed to bring them together. Zhang Guoqiang held Xiaomin’s snake-like slender waist. As they danced, he started to tremble, as if he was being electrocuted. The dance grew tighter until they embraced. That night, they stayed together, their hearts and bodies intertwined. Guoqiang was like a wolf, tearing at her, sucking her marrow and her whole being. They were incredibly happy that night.

Zhang Guoqiang never talked about his family. His father had died early, and his mother had a hard time raising him. Xiaomin didn’t ask, fearing it would make him sad. She could see in his eyes that he had unspeakable difficulties.

Xiaomin didn’t care about those things. Loving someone means giving your all, even if he had a family. Poverty didn’t matter. Every time Xiaomin asked, “Guoqiang, why do you love me?” the question was interrupted by a passionate kiss.

Guoqiang said he liked women a bit chubby and didn’t like them too skinny. Xiaomin started to gain weight daily. While others were trying to lose weight, she was gaining it. To her surprise, she looked more beautiful and charming. Sometimes after work, Guoqiang would immediately carry her and make love. She had fallen into a state of irrevocability. She started spending money on Guoqiang, buying clothes for him. She felt like the happiest woman in the world.

Once, during a moment of climax, Guoqiang let slip, “Darling, I really want to be your husband, to grow old with you.”

But what was meant to come still came. During the holiday season, Xiaomin waited at home for half a day, but Guoqiang didn’t return. Finally, she called him, “Guoqiang, where are you? Why aren’t you coming home for the holiday?” Guoqiang remained silent for a long time on the other end of the line before saying heavily, “Xiaomin, I’m getting married today.” Xiaomin heard this and simply replied with a “good” before hanging up. Life felt like a dream, but even after waking up, she still had to go on.

Not long after, Guoqiang came over, holding her and saying, “Xiaomin, I truly love you and can’t bear to leave you. But there’s no other way. Qianqian is my stepfather’s daughter. He paid for all my education. My mother is ill. To fulfill my duty as a son, I have to marry his daughter to repay his kindness. Forgive my three years of deception. My family has been waiting for me to save enough money after graduation to go home and marry.”

Xiaomin stared at the ceiling, her mind racing, wondering if she was the third wheel.

Guoqiang left, resigning from the company. Xiaomin began to degrade herself. The next day at work, she threw herself into the boss’s arms. She didn’t know if she was the boss’s fifth or sixth mistress. But money was all that mattered.

The boss was a successful man with a wife, worth billions. That night, lying in the boss’s arms, he said, “Xiaomin, dear, I’ve had my eye on you for a long time. I didn’t expect that Zhang Guoqiang kid to snatch you first. I thought he was a golden boy and you were a jade girl. Turns out he’s just a poor sap. Be my woman, okay?”

Xiaomin couldn’t forget Zhang Guoqiang. She always thought of him. When the boss pressed on her at night, entering her body, Xiaomin felt distressed. Her whole being ached. She became passive like a pig. The boss got tired of it. When they broke up, the boss still gave her a million yuan. He left the company, and she left her white-collar position.

Xiaomin returned home. No one knew she was a wealthy heiress. She knew that if money could buy love, she would have bought Zhang Guoqiang. But she couldn’t. For the sake of his mother, he could only do what he did.

Xiaomin went abroad. She was her parents’ darling. They got her a green card for the United States. She immigrated.

At the airport waiting lounge, she met Zhang Guoqiang again. “Xiaomin, is that you? Is it really you?” Seeing his excitement, Xiaomin smiled slightly and said, “What a coincidence, I’m here to see a friend off.” Xiaomin knew she was lying, trying hard to hide her true destination. She fled the airport, took another flight to America.

Life indeed feels like a dream. She had initially run away from her parents’ control, venturing into society alone. Her career had gone smoothly, but she stumbled when it came to marriage.
